View Full Version : Sand Dunes run Feb 2010?

Kyle asked me the other day when our Sand Dunes run would be?

I think we can put something together as an unofficial get together down there within the next three weeks. Post up if your interested and when you want to go - looking at weekends of Feb 20th, 27th, or March 6th as suggestions.

For those who are new or don't know, the Little Sahara Sand Dunes in north central Utah have been a tradition with us since the creation of the Intermountain Chapter. The sun always comes out at least for a little bit if not all day down at the dunes and the sand this time of year generally has a firm wet base allowing for some freedom of mobility. Wet years gives you the ability to get around to the upper backside bowls and often you can drive right up the face of Sand Mountain. It's a perfect place to bring your Jeep and do things with it you wouldn't normally think possible at angles that seem to defy gravity. Fun for the whole family and for any rig build stocker to rockcrawler. The better built the rig the more air time you just might enjoy:thumbup:. Enough of my sales pitch, who wants to go?

[Notes] Flags are required to run your Jeep on the dunes, ATV flags work great and there are a bunch of ways to get creative with orange material attached to CB antennas or the like, post up if you have any questions.

Definitely interested. The challenge, as always, of course is being able to go. March 6th is the only one of the 3 weekends you posted that I'm free. Have a funeral this Saturday, and a wedding next. Sheesh!

Shouldn't be an either/or scenario, unofficial run is pretty specific.

I'd do both, but I'll be out of town on the 13th.

What's the didreence? :D

I would think the sooner the better as sand conditions go. Although it doesn't matter for me as I don't have the tires for this trip. I have a flag if someone wants to borrow it.

Bald tires are just as good as new ones in the sand, maybe better.

Sounds like fun!! I've never done the dunes in a Jeep!

27th or 6th could work for me:wave1:

Is there a min. size flag req., or will a bike flag tied to the rollbar work??:scottm:

I'm happy with the bare minimum:moon::roflmao:

If anyone needs a flag, don't buy one, I have about 20 that I can bring with me.

$8 BLM Entrance fee, flag required. I simply ziptie a flag to my roof-mounted CB antenna.

"All such vehicles will have a whip mast and a 6 X 12 inch red/orange flag. Flags may be of pennant, triangle, square or rectangular shape. Safety flags must be attached within 10 inches of the tip of the whip mast with club or other flags mounted below the safety flag or on another whip.

Masts will be either minimum of six feet in height/length or industry standard height/length. "

Snow on the ground and clear skies will be perfect. Wet sand just means better traction. Weather.com says tomorrow will be mostly sunny and 50 degrees at Little Sahara.

This will be eternally debated... the route through Nephi vs. Santaquin vs Tooele vs Saratoga Springs.

In my experience, Tooele is the longest but has the fewest long hills to pull (for ease of towing), Nephi is the 2nd longest and has the 2nd easiest hills to pull, Santaquin is 2nd fastest but is tied for the worst hills, and I-15 to IKEA, then down Redwood and through Saratoga Springs is the fastest (now that construction is done) but is tied for the worst hills to tow up.

I nearly always take the last route, unless I just want to change it up for new scenery once in a while just because it's fastest. Transmissions and fuel economy be damned! Really, there's no more than 20 minutes difference between all 4 routes. Sometimes just the stop at American Burgers in Tooele is worth the extra time. Mmmmmm......

Jared:patriot:

It looks like I'll be there in the DURANGO!! Of course, it's still stock. I'll also be bringing my dad down with his new Honda 450R quad on the trailer to test it. Should be fun to mix up the two different hobbies a bit again this year. Of course, I'm most excited to see you guys' desert trucks! I love that stuff!

DrMoab
March 5th, 2010, 19:02
The only reason I like going through Tooele is because I avoid driving through Utard county that way. It could be double the distance and time and in my mind it would still be the better way to go.

The fewer miles on I-15 the better.

Thanks, and you're correct, jumping is not good if you haven't beefed up your rig and/or you fling it off stuff with a flat, hard landing zone.

btw, no built Ford Rangers were spotted during the day either. :dunno:

We had a bbq the night before and decided to just go hit up delle. My buddy ended up stripping the sparkplug threads on his bike and we didn't even get out of b-town till 3 anyway. Try to find a 10mmx1.0 helicoil on a saturday...:wierd:

Well, here is a link to my photo's. I used the wrong camera for the videos I took which puts them in a .mov format and I can't find a good converter yet so I'll post them up soon.
