when my 01 cherokee has the A/C on in the summer or the defrost on in winter. Sitting at stop light the jeep "pulses" forward and the rpms go up a bit, and it makes an awful grinding noise when the A/C is on. Anyone think it could be the A/C system? since it seems the defrost runs off same system?

2001 Xj pulsing when Defrost or AC on

Sounds like the a/c system.
The a/c pump will run when the defroster is on to blow "dry" air on the windshield.
Do not run the a/c system, you will lock the pump up. I did it, and shredded a belt shortly thereafter.
On the older XJ's you can unplug the compressor's electrical connector, allowing you to run the defroster without the a/c coming on; I'm not sure on the 01.
