digital in-dash clock ... plug and play?

noticed that there was a taped off wire harness tucked in behind where the digital in-dash clock came from the factory on some models, if i were to acquire one somewhere, would it plug right in?

Should be. Mine was. GoJeep I think has a write up on this, but if you get your year xj's clock its plug and play. I think you can get other years and switch the connector. easy mod.

I think there were four different types of plugs used over the years. You might have to cut and crimp.
