How do you remove the shift lever from the case. The Haynes manual shows a pin and retainer/bolt. Can,t find the thing,On the 87 that my son drove-- the tranny locked and won,t shift .stupid French crap.
looking for a good used XJ again.

you've got to take all those stupid boots off until you're down to the last one that is actually aroudn the lever, then pull that up (should be able to remove it just enough) and there will be 3 10m bolts holding the whole assembly into the tranny.

make sure to remember what gear or N you left it in. because itll be a PITA to get back in if you forget which gear you left it in... trust me.

If you look from the top. there are three bolts and you take those off, then pull the washer/coupler out. Then the shifter comes right up and pulls out. Its been awhile as I switched over to a ax 15, but used to have to remove that BA every year and a half to put a new slave in it. Good Luck
