Wow, to renew plates, my Grandma said she went in.....4 hours later, nothing was solved, because the computers went down. Yes, put your experience in the record books!

Definitely a new record in Cali, I have waited 2-3 hours in there before, and I was the only person waiting who spoke english!! I almost lost it.

I saw that ONCE, a guy had an intepreter for him to do the BMV driving test. How are they going to know roadsigns when they can't speak or read english? That blew me away.

It doesnt matter if they can read or understand english, they get more government money that way. These days I wonder if the US official language is Spanish?

That needs to change.
I love the fact that several states have that issue on the ballot this year.

I personally love the facts that there are idiots arguing for english to be the official language in areas of the country where spanish was originally spoken...
:D
Nevermind the other idiots who fight for english only and can't seem to put together a coherent sentence to save their life.

Head west a little bit...
I go to a place called the "Academy of Driving." Costs more than DMV by about 5 bucks per transaction, but they take cards, and I have never waited more than 2 minutes.

It might as well be!! It is spoken by 82% of the population....so those who don't speak it should probably start if they want to be an American so bad!! IMO it should be the official language, and will be soon!!:farmer:
Although the United States (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States) currently has no official language, English (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_language) has long been the de facto (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/De_facto) national language (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_language). English is spoken by about 82% of the population as a native language and nearly everyone in the United States uses it as a daily language. On May 18 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/May_18), 2006 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006) the Senate (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Senate) voted on an amendment to an immigration reform bill that would declare English (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_language) the national language of the United States.[1] (http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=109&session=2&vote=00131) The immigration reform bill itself, S. 2611 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S._2611), was passed in the Senate on May 25 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/May_25), 2006 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006), and now has to go back to the House of Representatives (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_House_of_Representatives) in conference to make sure amendments are agreed upon.

Making it the "Official" language won't automatically change anything except to make politicians appear that they're doing something for their constituents...
It's BS that politicians care more about making english the official language than investing more money in education to ensure that all kids are proficient in english...
Public schools are in the toilet but it's more important to legalize english?
BS!
It's crappy issues that people choose to focus on that enable the govt. to ignore more pressing and relevant problems...
Sorry... It annoys me more to see so many high school grads with piss poor english skills that it does to be behind a pair of beaners at the dmv...
Worry more about teaching english than a piece of paper proclaiming it official.

Well said, I do agree I was just trying to say that when I enter a DMV, I should not have to speak spanish to get business taken care of, and when I go to an ATM, I shouldnt have to choose english or spanish. I have never actually given this topic much though, living in NE it wasn't an issue but since being in southern california it is a huge PITA most everywhere I go. I was trying to take some friends to LA and had to ask for directions, I asked 4 people in different parts of town and none spoke english AT ALL, and then I asked a middle aged hispanic woman if she spoke english and she got pissed?????

Quebec in Canada Yep.
I don't understand this steadfast clinging to one language. The English you speak today is different from the one your great-grandfather spoke, and if you went back even 200 years, you would probably have considerable difficulty communicating with others who spoke 'English'.
Languages evolve over time and its pretty likely that in just three or four more generations there will be a lot more Spanglish than there is today. English will be difficult but recognizable then just as it would be to a person from four generations ago if they were transported into the world of today.
Its just a language, is it really the defining feature of American Culture?

I'm with you and Gil ln this, but just to be ornery I feel it's reasonable to point out that in Quebec, they do consider it a defining feature of their culture, to the extent that there are some pretty stringent requirements regarding signage and the like.

Agree 100%. I've said this many times.
Back on topic - The California DMV numbering system seems to be more efficient than the old wait-in-line. And San Clemente is the best OC office.

Dial 1 for English, Dial 2 for Espanol.....
Get rid of that bull crap. It's too easy to NOT learn English in America! By providing, there's absoultely no reason to learn English. You'll be translated forever!
