I want to swap out my current stereo in my Jeep for one with an mp3 jack and Im looking at buying an ipod to plug into my new stereo, so that I will really eliminate the need to burn another CD. But, I really dont know very much, if anything about Ipods. So, im hoping some of you guys on here who are savvy with/about them can give me some advice on which Ipod to buy? (nano, etc.), Ideally, I would need a car charger, if they make them? Also, I remeber hearing about the different capcities of Ipods, but I dont know which model holds how many songs, etc. I would obviously be downloading music from my windows media player on my computer to the ipod, so I will need a cable from the computer to the ipod. Im sure im not the first person to think of/do this, so im just looking for the best setup out there before I go off and buy anything. Also, I will be trying to buy at least the Ipod used. Thanks. :music:

If your going to buy a new stereo buy one that has an ipod plug.
I recommend Alpine. I love their radio's. A little more expensive, but higher quality. They you run the ipod cable into your glove box so no one can see it. Your Ipod will charge this way also.
I have the 8gb Ipod, had it for a few years now. I got my Fiance' the 16 GB Ipod for Christmas. They work great. The newer ones have video on them too.
I HATE the nano's. No screen brings the suck.
Depends on how much music you have for what size you want. My 8gb got full really fast. But I have a bit of music. I would get at least the 16gb Ipod...
Hope this helps.

Hmm, never thought about putting it in the glove box. good idea to consider. How many songs does your 8GB ipod hold? How about the 16GB one? I want to get an idea of the capacity, and I dont want to run out of room! haha.

If you are lookin to use this solely for your vehicle I would (and I did) buy a referb one off of amazon. they have everything from 8gb g3 (3rd generation) nanos for like 100 bucks (which is what i use) to your more expensive options (just type in refurbished ipods). The previous post talked about the nano having no screen, but he was slightly mistaken. It is the shuffle that has no screen. He was however right on with the head unit. I own the CDA-9883 which allows you to control your tunes from the unit itself and charges your ipod with the optional cable (costs about 50 bucks extra for it but it's worth it). As far as the cable to transfer tunes to your ipod from the computer, the ipod will come with it's own cable. All you'll have to do is go to apple's site and download itunes and then import your files into the program. Itunes is a great program that lets you make playlists and such and pretty much organizes your music for you. Hope this helps. Feel free to ask if you got any questions.

thanks dashboardhero. :) Thanks for the tip about Itunes too. that should make it easier for me. Well, I guess that gives me a place for reference on song capacity as well. Edit: So, do they make this adapter cable, to control the ipod from the head unit, for other brands and/or models of head units? Or is this strictly an Alpine thing? Im Just Curious.

Another alternative to buying the Apple iPod is the Sony Walkman MP3 players. They have an 8gb for around $70 and a 16gb for around $90. I have been using the 8gb for about a year now and absolutely love it aside from only holding around 2000 songs. If you do comparisons online you will see that the Sony is held as highly as the iPod at a much cheaper price. The Sony doesn't have as many colors as the iPod they come in red, black, and violet, depending on which one you buy and the newer ones have speakers built right into them. They require nothing more than aux. jack on your cd player to hook-up, and include the transfer cable from computer to player which also charges it. If its in your vehicle and needs charged all you need is a Motorola phone charger which I know can be an inconvenience having 2 extra cables floating around. I would love to buy an iPod but I had a very tight budget at the time and came across the Sony and absolutely love it so I thought I would throw it out there as an option for you. Good luck with your decision!

My suggestion, get a head unit that has bluetooth, the ipod 3.0 has it, you then just pair the unit and stream music from your ipod or iphone, no cables.
My JVC does it, I have it paired with my iphone [att], my Moto v750 and I stream off the Iphone or V750 and send and receive calls over the V750 and the iphone, my daughters W755 and my wifes V750 are also paired with it.
The advantage of a head unit with iphone cable is it usually has an iphone interface and it charges, charging being lacking in the BT no cable setup.
Be careful of the iphone charger and using it in the always on plug in the jeep, there have been quite a few fires from burned wires when it's left in there over nite, the charger always works even when there is no device plugged into it. There have been a couple here at www.bmja.org our local jeep club.

One other thing, there is a USB interface on the JVC, I plug in a usb memory stick and usually use that for my music, if it's a long trip I plug in a 80gb hard drive and use that. I bought super small 8gb memory sticks for 10.99, thats alot of mpg's.

My pioneer has the USB interface as well. At first I was just using it with a thumb drive to play music off the drive, an 8gb holds a lot as mentioned. Then I tried hooking the Ipod's USB cable to it one day and found out that it will control the Ipod as well. I flush mounted an extension into the cig lighter panel like so:

Alpine or Eclipse Head units are the way to go. I have the Eclipse CD3100 and be fore that had the CD3000. I am thinking about getting the CD5030 but I want bumpers more than I need a head unit! :D I was looking at crutchfield yesterday and they had some decent deals on many head units and they came with iPod cables/interfaces. They may be a little high but their customer service is awesome and they include everything you need to do an install for free! I haven't ran it in my new Jeep but I just ran the cable into my center console. It fits right through that hole where the latch is supposed to be but does anyone actually have that latch anymore?

Another vote for a radio with the iPod cable. I run mine into the center console and it works great. Most radio's now come with little remotes. At first I didn't like the idea but now I use it every time i'm in the Jeep, even when i'm listening to the regular radio. Makes it easy to change songs/stations and still pay attention to the road. Plus it makes it really nice when i'm listening to my iPod..just set it to shuffle and use the remote.
Most radio's will charge most iPod's. I had a 2nd gen Nano that finally gave up last summer, and it would charge when plugged into my JVC head unit. I bought a new Nano last summer (can't remember what gen they're up to now) and for some reason it will not charge on my radio...haven't been able to figure out why.

I love my Pioneer, I just used the Ipod cable that came with the ipod to plug it into the back of the head unit, and ran the other end to the Glove box where my ipod now resides.
I picked it up for about $200 and it came blue tooth ready, meaning, it comes with the mic and all, just sync your phone and you're good.

I agree with everything here except the Alpine thing.
Every Alpine I have had and this includes the ten Kenworths we have that came with them have failed.
They sound good but they make shitty displays.
Been with Pioneer now for a couple of stereos and they work great.

My wifes did that with her nano in her blazer, then I inherited it and it did it at first in my jeep. It charges now, but I really dont know why. The only thing I can figure is that I started making sure that the little screen printed symbol on the Ipod end of the cable was facing the front of the Ipod from now on. The cable is ambi, but I think since USB only uses 4 wires it may only charge the power ports on one side or something.

Every Ipod comes with a link cable. You are going to be stuck using Itunes to interface if you go with the name brand Ipod. That being said, I have the latest gen Nano and for a music player it works very well.
Another option for use in the car, If you have a deck that has Aux in RCA inputs, you can buy a little cable that goes from a head phone jack to RCA outs and run the Ipod into the radio that way. You don't get control of the Ipod through the radio (you still have to use the controls on the ipod to change songs and such) but its is deffinitly a cheaper option if you have a radio with this to begin with.

Good point about the charging. sound quality through the USB type interface is a little better too but the RCA is a cheap option if you already have a deck with the input.

That's the way to do it. Going wireless just overcomplicates things and creates more areas where failure can occur.
Although I disagree with you on the Alpine comment, I haven't had problems with the three Alpines I have.

iTunes is free, I sync my ipod with an opensource linux utility called rhythmbox though. I think that head unit was like $200 at wally world. Like I said though, I got another one for my cherokee that was $70 cheaper and still had the ipod connection through USB, I just liked this one more and was willing to pay the extra to go into my DD comanche.

I use a 2g iPod shuffle hooked to the axillary jack on our radios. We have Pioneers in 4 of the Jeeps and the MyGiG nav radios in the 2 newer Jeeps. It works fine and is cheap. Less than $50 for a 2g and it will hold 520 +/- songs.
In my trail rig I just have a amp that I hook the iPod to and play it, no radio in there for someone to steel.
X a billion on iTunes, just make sure you back-up every once in a while to save your music files in case of a computer crash.

If it has a Chrysler radio, you can get an ipod adapter to plug in the spot the CD changer would have connected.
Once you start listening to ipod and not the receiver, you might not want to put in a new radio head unit

I like the conveience of drag and drop functions that pretty much every other music player has, and the fact that they typically cost a lot less. And for the price of the iPods they should have a REAL hard drive in them like the zunes.
Yes, Itunes is free, but unnecessary and uses too much ram. I have more important things to do on my computer, and syncing all the time is a PITA. For 5g and older Ipods, you can use a linux based setup called RockBox, which makes it more like the alternate music/video players that have drag and drop capability.
My current deck is an older Alpine, probably one of the best units they made. CDA-7894, if anyone cares. But it has an aux input. And it also plays mp3 cd's.
But for newer units.. I definitely recommend Blaupunkt, Pioneer/Premier, and Eclipse

Define REAL hard drive. Especially with the new solid states that are out there, what is the real difference. Other than you can head crash that Zune with a platter array in it.

My Jeep had an Alpine when I first got it and it was alright. Fairly old though. The display died and the volume quit working. I figure it led a good life though. I had a Kenwood that died. I'm not a fan of Kenwood anymore. Two in a row that crapped out too shortly. Back in around 2000 I bought one that was good, but the last two sucked. I've had good luck with Pioneers. I like them quite a bit. My last stereo was a JVC and I liked that one quite a bit as well.
I'm looking at getting an iPod as well, can't decide between a 5th gen Nano or an 8GB iTouch.

Pioneer, Clarion and JVC are the three top ones in my book. The jensen in the TJ has crapped out part way, no longer displays green on the LCD, just red, the blue died, I think it happened when the daughter got a jump in the mall from one of those portable power boxes the security types carry and don't know how to use.

Sorry I forgot about this thread.
Alpine spends their time making good stereo's. High Quality sound, not fancy displays. They are also build to use an ipod and iphone with.
Yon control the ipod with the cd player so you don't need to pull the ipod out to change the song and it will charge your ipod so you can take it with you.
EVERY, I mean EVERY stereo I have ever bought has been Alpine, and I have never had one go bad. Thats only about 5 different ones, but thats a lot for me. I never buy the cheapest one, and always buy new.
I also don't take the display off all the time, which I am sure if your not careful could case display failure.
I use Itunes all the time for my music. I havent bought a CD in years. I don't see the point when I can get a song for .99 or get the whole album for cheap then burn a disk.
The next Alpine I buy (couple of days maybe) I am thinking of getting the "Digital media center" which doesn't even have a CD player, just radio, ipod, sat and HD Radio.

I've had an Alpine CDA-9856 in the XJ for about 4 years along with the iPod High-Speed (or whatever they call it) cable. This replaced an older Alpine head unit with the external KCA-420i iPod adapter. Don't be tempted to pick up the KCA-420i combination if you see it going cheap on eBay or the like; it's total garbage. 'Slow' doesn't go far enough to describe it, and it's yet another box to find space for in the XJ.
Pros: integrated directly to the stereo; has no issues with 20000+ songs on a 160GB iPod; iPod lives in the centre armrest.
Cons: I really hate what Alpine has done to their menus; not as fast as using the iPod directly, but still better than what it replaced.
I had both my old 20GB black & white 4th-gen iPod as well as my current first-release 160GB unit connected to it at various times. Regardless of which iPod has been connected, I've experienced lockups of either the head unit or the iPod. This has resulted in having to power-cycle the head unit repeatedly to clear the issue, or doing a soft reset on the iPod. In some cases, the head unit has stayed locked up for several hours; even removing battery power has no effect in clearing it. Alpine has been less than responsive to the problem.
To be perfectly honest, I've bought nothing but Alpine stereo gear since about 1999, but this is probably my last unit from them. The sound quality is OK, but even with trying to be objective about the fact that this was early hardware with intergrated iPod support, the attitude of their customer service department even while the unit was in warranty has pretty much ensured that the next one won't be one of theirs.

From a quick look, it appears that Pioneer did the same thing Alpine did on their later units with integrated iPod support: one end is an iPod connector, while the other end is proprietary to their head unit. I'm basing this solely off of what the cable looks like in this Amazon listing (http://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-CD-IB100II-iPod-Interface-Adapter/dp/B000FI71SG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1230583138&sr=1-1), so could be off-base here - but it at least looks that way.
The cable you're using to sync & charge the iPod likely has a USB plug on the end you plug into your computer (assuming a newer model; older ones used a Firewire plug). I'm willing to bet that if you plug it into USB port on the back of the head unit it won't recognise the songs on the iPod - that port is probably designed to only work with removable media like USB thumb drives.

Hey, yes it will. I thought I needed that cord as well. One day for just shits and giggles I plugged in the Ipod using the USB sync cord and it worked outright. Full Ipod control and charging. It is worth a shot just to plug it in. They still have the port for pluging that special cable in, but I have no idea what it could possibly do for me other than separate another $20 from my pocket.

I do believe the Premier (same as pionner just slightly more money depending on where you purchase), comes with the said cable. Probably why they cost the extra 10-20$ lol.
Since I do not think that Microshaft or Apple deserve any of my money, is part of the reason I prefer other music/video players. And drap and drop is a lot better than using a program is not necessary and uses hard drive space that I can use for more important things, and just another thing that has pop-ups to ask if you want to upgrade. I know exactly where all my music is, I dont need an F'ing program to save it in a "library" for me.

The cool thing is I can use my front USB port to power my GPS freeing up a 12v cig plug for something else.

Our new Commander has the MyGiG Nav/radio and also comes with a iPod cable running into the glove box. Neat set-up considering its factory.
What year is your Commander? My wife's GC (08) has the MyGiG but there is no cable in the glove box.

Your spot on.. found a pic of the back panel of my stereo. It doesnt not have the USB.. i'll need to spend the $50 for the proprietary cable.
Did they shoot the price up recently? I was at best buy a few months ago before I figured out that USB would run mine and the cable was only $25ish, think they had an open one for $18.

I'd skip this one. That wire outside of the main cable with the inline fuse isn't exactly filling me with confidence.
Any idea why the other one has an external adapter box as part of the kit? Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I'm not familiar with your head unit and can't tell if your model needs an external controller or not.

Turns out both of those harness' will charge the Ipod, only the one with the box gives you Ipod control from the headunit or remote in my case.
Should have known i needed the more expensive of the two.. :looser:
Now to find a decent set of door speakers..
