It has some upsides.
With that long low plastic stuff in the front you'll know when the rocks are too big when you hear the plastic hit and break.
That nice IFS front and independent rear will prevent you from getting into anything too serious just by not working and bottoming out the suspension before you get into trouble.
That nicely designed front and rear should deter the most innovative bumper designers from making the vehicle unsafe for OTHER drivers by eliminating YOUR crumple zone...
After looking at the last picture in the www.jeep.com gallery I wonder how long and how many people it took to pile up all those rocks around it.
All in all a nice design and it will definetly prevent alot of off road mishaps by it's inability to even start to get you there..
We might go look at one, wife needs a new set of wheels and the fact that the arm rest moves forward 3" might be key to our buying one. She's short and has a neck injury, she needs an armrest but all we have looked at the armrest on the center consoles don't go far enough forward, till now.
For me, I would not touch one. The only jeep vehicle that is in the running for me is the wrangler 4 door but not for a year or two till I see how that V6 works out...

I recently drove the Compass at a DCX open day, and came away liking it. Sure, it's not a 'real' Jeep, but it's not meant to be. For what it is, though - a versatile 5-door AWD hatchback - it's fine. It's a contender in the same arena as Subaru's currently in, a market Jeep has traditionally not occupied. My attitude is that if they can sway someone away from a Forester or Outback, so much the better: DCX is apparently getting close to having some serious financial issues, and there are rumours that Mercedes may be looking to bail out of the merger.
Re: the Patriot: to clarify, it's on the same platform as the Compass (Dodge Caliber), but gains additional ground clearance and a low range in the transfer case. The new KK Liberty is on the Dodge Nitro platform; from driving it, I thought the Nitro was a heap of crap. At least the KJ rides and handles fairly well for what it is whereas the Nitro's like a dinghy in a gale.
It just perplexes me that everyone screams about how these vehicles are diluting the Jeep name, etc. but at the same time don't want to acknowledge that not every Jeep ever made has been the ultimate off-road device. If Jeep can successfully move into new territory with these vehicles and gain market share with them while remaining truthful about their capabilities (which so far they appear to have done) then I'm all for it. Me, I'll take a Rubicon Unlimited in a few years' time.

The 4.0L is done. Sad to say, but it's done.
I like this part of the article.
For that you'll have to opt for the optional Freedom Drive II setup that includes a low-range 19:1 crawl axle ratio plus 17-inch wheels shod with all-terrain rubber that provides an extra inch of ground clearance. They're all necessary ingredients for tackling the backwoods and safely returning to civilization after the fun is over.
Is 19:1 crawling?

Um why don't they offer two different engines to suit the public's demand?

Because Jeep needs to raise their CAFE numbers to something that isn't going to cause them to be hit with penalties in the next round of emissions and economy requirements.
The 4.0 is out of production. The XJ is out of production. The last real Jeep is the JK. All of these are givens.
What I'd like to know is why there's so much resistance to the idea of Jeep making a Subaru-basher. Original Jeepsters were 2WD. DJs were 2WD. XJs, MJs, KJs, ZJs, WJs, WKs, XKs, and now JKs were or are available in 2WD. Ditto the J-Trucks. At least AWD is an available option on the Compass / Patriot, but that doesn't mean that they're necessarily any better or worse than any other non-4WD-Jeep to date.
Again, I would love to hear a coherent argument as to why the Compass and Patriot suck beyond 'I don't like them' or 'they're not an XJ'. So far nobody's been able to do that, and I'm willing to bet that most of the people who are decrying them haven't driven one.

I don't like them....nothing more...nothing less. If you took a minute to read my post. (i obviously didn't support the Bush/Cheney agenda) you'd have seen WTF i was talking about.
I've read a couple of your classified critiques. I don't need to to justify my position to someone that browbeats private citizens attempting to sell their property....fawking hypocrite.
Drop the 'feeler' crap. Seriously.
Come up with a price, offer it, and go from there.
The "OMG LOLZ PLZ 2 B GIVING ME TEH MONAYZ OR SUM TING" approach isn't going to work.
I caught this EXACT post in two threads. While i was annoyed by the feeler status of their threads....these posts still made you an a$$hole. I don't have a problem with you....just check your own posts before you go after someone else.

If they want to recapture the Cherokee market, why not stick the drivetrain and suspension from the new Wrangler's under a purpose built unibody, then get rid of the lastara looking round headlights

I think Jeep should be touting this as the new XJ.

I just got back from SEMA. I got the opertunity to see the new Wrangler 4 door up close and personal. All I can say is the XJ has nothing on the new Jeep. It is a awesome piece of equipment. I seen about 50 different ones from stock to full blown show rigs with Hemis. The market is going to explode with new parts for them. I got to see the Compass and Patriot as well. I am not impressed one bit. The new JK is just plain awesome.
On the other hand I got to drive the FJ Cruiser on a course Toyota set up. That is one damn impressive little rig. IFS or not. There is no way a bone stock XJ could ever follow a FJ. They are crazy stable and the traction control is really smooth. I had to lock the rear axle 1 time on a 10 minute course. If Jeep looks into some of the things Yota has done and put them into a new vehicle than I am all for it.
I am a die hard Mopar man and I love my XJ but I am really leaning towards a JK or a FJ.

The toyotas are fine if you don't mind driving an Easter Egg.
I think they are the fugliest 4X4 made today.

I could care less about your political stance. And quite honestly, "I don't like them....nothing more...nothing less" is the most considered reason I've seen so far in this thread.
I've read a couple of your classified critiques. I don't need to to justify my position to someone that browbeats private citizens attempting to sell their property....fawking hypocrite.
*Shrug* if it's posted in public and seems like a dumb idea, expect the public to call you out on it. Nothing hypocritical about that.

I am an a**hole, and I call it as I see it. No problem with you either; I'm just trying to understand what it is that people don't like about this particular vehicle beyond the usual 'LOLZ ITS TEH GHEY' replies I've been seeing for months.

First impressions are everything (vehicles, relationships, etc). If you don't like the looks of something (i'm guessing that's 90%+ of the people in this thread) you aren't going to give it a chance.
