Hey Everyone my name is Josh... I am new to the site and new to the 4x4 world and I am hoping to start off with an XJ. I have always wanted a Jeep and an XJ at that. I am looking at getting one in the very near future, but firt I wanted to learn as much as I can about the rig that may be helpful. I am looking at an 88 in denver, that I beleive has a dana44 in the rear and a dana 30 up front with a 231 transcase... So hope to get to know you all

Josh

How much do you have to spend?

Well I am looking for one that hasn't had any suspension work done to it so I can learn what the rig will take and what I can take or do in it... I will go from there. I have found a few in Denver that are basically if not still bone stock... I am looking to spend only about 1-1.5k on one... But thankfully I have found a few in the range and even the years that I want, which is the late 80's to real early 90's before they became a Chrysler product. Dont ask why but I dont much like Chrysler (Even though there werent many if any changes over the 17 years that the style stayed the same)

Oh I forgot to mention that I am actually in Wyoming in Laramie which is only a about a half hour from FoCo and about 2 from Denver. I will be down in Denver tomorrow to look at a few, but probably wont make the plunge till I get word on some other things...

Plus I have a good friend who is in school with me up here that is basically going to be my mentor and help guide me in the right direction to get what I want... He drives an white 87 with a T&T long arm setup on 35x12.50's. He is on here but not sure what his sn is his real name is Morgan

That's interesting....... I'd imagine you'll find more XJ folks preferring the later model years because of the significant improvements made getting AWAY from the AMC designs/product. Myself included.

High Output engine and elimination of the crappy Peugeot BA10 trans after '90, Unibody strength/design improvements after '91, OBDII after '94, Interior safety/seat belts, air bags after '94, even better after '96...... just to name a few reasons that I'll never own a pre '91 again......

Just make sure you don't end up with the crappy 2.8L V6 engine. It is underpowered and known to have reliability problems.

By the way, I prefer the Renix era machines myself.

Well i understand what you are saying about the improvements as far as obd and the restraints... Now I would love to have one with obd two but I don't need the airbags and the locking seat-belts, they will do more harm than good for the application that it will be for.

OBDII started in '96.
But personally I would look for a 91-94. I'm a fan of the HO motor and no airbags/OBDII junk. It's fairly easy to swap in a d44 rear but not so easy on the wallet finding one. What I did is just swapped the carrier and shafts from a 29 spline 8.25 in my 94's factory 27 spline. With the way I wheel it's more than enough for 33's and with alloys I could easily run 35's if I ever desired. Also the 8.25's can be had for around $100 with the 29 spline shafts, and only take an afternoon to bolt in.

I think I found the one i want... Its an 88 pioneer with what i believe is a dana44 in the rear but not quite sure. the interior is in great shape for the year that it is and the head liner is the only thing sagging. It has only about 127k on it with the typical leaks. I did not get the chance to try the 4 wheel drive out but that is okay... the brakes are a little messed up but i can fix that... and for only 988 its not a bad deal for the work required..
