I'm thinking about buying an AW4 that orifinally was matched to a 242. The 242 is not available, so I'd like to just put my 231 onto the AW4. Will I have any problems?

It depends on the year of the trans and t-case.

The trans I'm looking at is the same year as the 231 I have sitting in the garage.

Yes same spline count it'll fit. I replaced my unreliable 242 with a 231
