View Full Version : Slug-bug, No hit backs!

My 11yo started this sometime during the summer. Whenever he sees a VW Beatle he hits me on the shoulder and says, "Slug-bug, no hit backs!" Since most of the Beatles he sees are the late model POS/FWD Beatles I found it was fairly amusing and respected the 'no hit back' clause.
The other day we had pulled up to a red light and a car pulled up beside us on the right. My son, sitting in the passenger seat, hits me on the shoulder and says, "Slug-bug, no hit backs!" I look over at the car and it's not a Beatle. I tell him, "That's not a VW Beatle." I'm trying to be fair, giving him warning that he's due for a hit-back. He says, "I don't care," and hits me again. I figure he's only 11, I'll give him one more chance. "That's not a Beatle, it's a PT Cruiser." "Same thing," he says, and hits me a third time. "Fair enough," I said. The light turned green and we went on about our business.

We call it "punch buggy" up here rather than "slug-bug", but its the same game. When my boy was about five he started doing "punch jeep" and "punch truck" to his sheer delight. It was about that time that I developed a new game that I like to call "random beating". It seems to have superceded "punch buggy" now...

hmmm...I'm working on some way to combine 'Random Beating' with 'Cruiser Bruiser'.
A couple days after the above incident, we were sitting in line at the drive-thru teller. The boy was playing GameBoy when a Beatle pulled up on my left. Smack! I hit him in the shoulder.
"Hey!"
"Slug Bug, no hit backs." I'm thinkin, "I'm cool, I'm cool." Smack! He hits me back. WTF! "No hit backs!"
He shrugs, "I don't care."
All right then. SMACK! I hit him harder. "Slug bug, no hit backs!"
He turns like he's going to hit back, again. I was looking stright ahead. "How far do you want to go with this?" I ask.
"Never mind," he says, as he goes back to his GameBoy.
I still like the Random Beating concept, though.

My favorite game to play with the kids is 'steamroller'. Whenever they are sprawled out playing videogames, I shout "STEAMROLLER" and dive onto them rolling around over them, crushing them under my thundering weight...
Now all I have to do is work the word 'steamroller' into a conversation and my son goes "NO DAD! NO, NO! ! !"
Of course I do it anyway...

Except, I would actually crush them :D
Truth is, with the 11yo at 5'5" and 140# and the 6o at 4'4" and 90# I have to be careful what kind of chit I want to get started. Except for a lack of training, they could quite literally kick my ass. I've promised them training, but I'll have to be careful what kind of grudge they might be carrying.

next time you're out driving around and he falls asleep, drive into a VW dealership, and yell "punch buggy" (or in your case slug bug) and start wailing on him. LOL

I'd say "You're grounded, no crybacks."
Usually, I just say, "Give me that GameBoy."
"No, No! I'm sorry, I'm sorry."
I really did throw one away, once, so that threat is pretty solid. They were always leaving them lying around. I said, "If you don't care about these things, I'll just throw them away." He had to dig through three trash cans to find it :)

Anyone who buys a PT cruiser should be punched.

Just because XJ Dreamin's young son now has a VW and a son of his own is no reason to let this thread die.
