-get axles from travis and swap them in
-design and fabricate 3 link and cross member
-weld on ruff stuff stiffeners
-make 3x3 angle iron stiffeners for the rear of the unibody
-make shock hoop things that go through the floor for the rear shocks and rework rear bumpstops
-fix lots of rust (this one could take quite a while)
-weld in 2x6 rocker replacements and tie into unibody rails
-swap transmission
-(?) design and fabricate anti-axle wrap mechanism (for the rear)

to buy:
-DOM and rect tube for 3 link and crossmember
-tube adapters
-joints for 3 link and anti-axle wrap device
-clutch
-rims and tires (haven't even decided what kind i want yet)

To do:
- weld on HD stiffeners (get rears too probably)
- swap in clutch fan (twin stock e-fans don't cut it in the summer)
- get more spare front axleshafts

I think that's it...:dunno:. There's more I COULD do, but nothing that's a requirement.

For the new Jeep, I need to

-weld on front to rear stiffeners
-get some spare front axleshafts/hubs for peace of mind
-make or buy quarter panel armor
-rocker replacements
-install bumper/winch
-steering box brace (ordered the c-rok yesterday)
-rework rear shocks/mounts

and like Colin, I'm sure there's more I could do but that stuff I'd definitely like to have taken care of...

really not bad at all :)

to do:
-dont break the jeep
-dont break the 30

-dont throw any money at the 30
-get more spare shafts
-get more spare ball joints

actual things that should be done:
-front pinion bearings
-front driveshaft rebuild/replace

biggest thing to do:
-commit to going

all in all, i could very well blow up the front end and just decide to strip the jeep and start the stiffeners/tons before anything else happens:D

hmm

never heard of the grinding

but until recently 4.56 was as deep as you could go in a 8.25

but now nitro gear offers 4.88's for the 8.25s

I have a stock tire carrier as seen here....
http://i652.photobucket.com/albums/uu246/mrshaft696/jeep%20work/scan1141.jpg

The carrier does not work with a 33, the tire is too wide and heavy to be latched onto the hatch. It has to be spaced out and rattles/wiggles like a bitch. So I just want to modify it so that it latches to the bumper and not the hatch. I need the room in the trunk to go on trips etc, sometimes I go with 3 other people so filling the hatch with tire is out of the question & so is putting it on the roof, because I haul kayaks up there.

I suppose I have 2 "to do" list options:
Common items:
-Unibody tie-in's for rear bumper
-new front bumper mounts (unibody tie-in's)
-maybe a winch on front bumper
-maybe/hopefully rock rails
-SYE
-hopefully skids

Axles option 1:
-XJ width 9" rebuilt
-regear D30

Axles option 2:
-HP44/9" built and installed (and geared to at least 4.88's)

If option 2 is pursued it will most likely involve a long arm kit being fabbed/installed as well, though option 1 may also involve long arms.

I might/probably will grab another d-shaft, but id rather find a source on just a longer travel slip yoke and spline section like a woods shaft and build my own.

if i could rebuild the rear brakes for $15 i would, im just too cheap to buy everything since it should be all rebuilt. i MAY swap some discs on, but only if i can pull a complete JY setup for under $40

-297x D30 shafts - Added - Hopefully taking care of this this weekend

Axles option 1: - CHECK
-XJ width 9" rebuilt
-regear D30 - (with truetrac and diff cover)

Possibly long arms

So I have come quite a bit further than I expected already, updated items in bold... The bumper tie-ins are just a matter of picking up some steel. And the winch/long arms I think are largely dependent on how the taxes look.

I really hope the guy with the skids that I emailed gets back to me soon... That would knock another item off my list.

-weld on ruff stuff stiffeners
-make 3x3 angle iron stiffeners for the rear of the unibody
-make shock hoop things that go through the floor for the rear shocks and rework rear bumpstops
-fix lots of rust (this one could take quite a while) in progress
-weld in 2x6 rocker replacements and tie into unibody rails
-swap transmission/transfercase(s)

to buy:
-DOM and rect tube for 3 link and crossmember need DOM still
-tube adapters done
-joints for 3 link done
-clutch
-rims and tires (haven't even decided what kind i want yet)

i also decided to make a doubler out of a np231 front half and a D300... so add that to my list.

i'll be lucky to finish for fall crawl. but if by some miracle i'm done by nacfest, i'll be there.

You could totally make fall crawl. Let me fix that list for you.

This is all you have left that you NEED to do.

shall i be the first to do a list for this year?

to do:
-design and fabricate 3 link and cross member
-weld on ruff stuff stiffeners
-weld in 2x6 rocker replacements and tie into unibody rails
-swap transmission

to buy:
-DOM and rect tube for 3 link and crossmember
-clutch
-rims and tires (haven't even decided what kind i want yet)

And skip the doubler for now. Build it over the summer. You're totally going to regret not being able to go.

its more fun to wheel now than build stuff for later

I figure once my rig is up and running that leave me 1-2 weekends per month of wheeling and week nights and the other weekends to work on the Jeep. My goal is to upgrade but to keep the Jeep in a functional state at all times. I.e. a new transfer case will not go in until I have it completely done and have everything I need to fully complete that part of the project.

...That coming from a guy who hasn't driven his Jeep for more than 5 hours in the past 20 months  Maybe I should just go shuddup until I get out wheeling at least once.

I just realized I'll only have $300($100 goes just to a place to stay) and it would cost $250(very optimistic calculation) to drive the J10 down. Don't get me started on how much it's going to cost to get that truck back running.

1 - buy decent padding and install "new" carpet. Put the interior back together (with me doing the work myself that will take a whole damn month).
2 - replace headliner (Another month since a full length OHC is involved)
3 - source some decent, cheap 4" coils somewhere & maybe some leafs (then figure out whether my OME Long Travel shocks will still work)
4 - get the Swampers mounted, balanced & on the XJ

I just swapped in a '96 XJ booster so I have my old single diaphragm booster/master if that's what you are looking for and can figure out some way to get it from MA to NJ

And with that, I can now (almost) knock of brakes from the list. got my rear disks installed and a ZJ prop w/ XJ Dual Diaphragm booster installed. Then I went to bleed it out and one of the soft lines for the rear calipers is leaking.... so almost done.

And I have everything to do my steering, finally found a big ass tap wrench so I am getting to work on that as soon as I can get a table/vice built/setup.

And I have [almost] all the steel required to plate my unibody and do high clearance rockers w/ unibody tie-ins/boatsides. Just gotta get something to plate over the legs from unibody to rocker whenever I get that far along.

My bet is that the MC on the WJ setup has a larger bore, but I'm not sure and this could be complete BS info. Probably easier to swap the MC and booster as a unit rather than putting the WJ MC on a 95/96 booster :dunno: booster and master cylinder specs are something I know very little about.

-get some spare front axleshafts/hubs for peace of mind
-make or buy quarter panel armor
-rocker replacements

-steering box brace (ordered the c-rok yesterday)
-rework rear shocks/mounts

and like Colin, I'm sure there's more I could do but that stuff I'd definitely like to have taken care of...

really not bad at all :)

so, uhhh, well, colin offered his stock 60 shafts/hubs for me to bring as spares... as for the rest of the list? :conceited

haha. poor Simon. he should call the towing company ahead and tell them all the days of the month he plans on wheeling and tell them to meet him at RC at 5pm.

but when he gets this done there will literally be nothing original left on his MJ other then the body. which Im told has very little rust. so what else could possibly go wrong?

Dundy - lol, good markups. I have some of that on there because it's been nagging me for a while now (note that I don't have anything tagged in terms of criticality), notably the power mirror wiring harness that I built myself which stopped working.

As to the antenna, I've been using a Walkman and cassette adapter to listen to FM since RocktoberFest, and it's really getting old. Fortunately, no longer having the front fender splash shields makes that a quick job once I get a working one.

Yea same one. Dunno really. It's fine when it's warm out but over the winter it was leaking from the top front. It's not a necessity as of right now but I figure if I'm going to have the valve cover off than might as well do that to.

Keyless entry retrofit

Am I to understand you fitted a radio transmitter style keyless entry from say a '97+ into your '92, replacing the IR system?

Rob Mayercik
May 26th, 2010, 10:19
Am I to understand you fitted a radio transmitter style keyless entry from say a '97+ into your '92, replacing the IR system?

Not exactly - everything I found online indicated that the 97+ XJ keyless system was dependent on the BCM (body control module) and if you didn't have at least one remote already programmed to it, a dealer scan tool to program remotes.

What I actually did was swap in the keyless entry module from a 95 Chrysler Concorde, which is RF-based, but self-contained (supply +12V to one line and pull another to ground, and it goes into "learning mode" all by itself). I based my work on this link I found:

http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f13/ir-rf-keyless-entry-conversion-676076/ (http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f13/ir-rf-keyless-entry-conversion-676076/)

Where a fellow did the same change to his ZJ. Seems 93-97 LH sedans (and, supposedly, some RAM pickups in that general period)all used this particular self-contained module.

All I had to do was pore through the wiring schematics in my FSM to figure out which lines to splice to B+, Ground, Unlock Relay, and Lock Relay on the harness in my XJ. Turned out to be really easy - the module slips between the roof and headliner nicely without rattling around, and with fresh batteries in the remote (found a RKE module and fob as a matched set from the same vehicle for about $30 on eBay) I can now lock/unlock my Jeep from as much as 30 feet away. For the moment I have to hit the unlock button twice, but the RKE module has a separate line for just the LF door as well - I'm thinking of either tying that into the unlock relay line too with a diode, or trying to run a wire down into the LF door and create a LF-only unlock function (will require some sort of diode since it looks like it's a single supply voltage fanned out from the relay to all four doors), but I'll worry about deciding that after NACFest - the original XJ functionality has been replicated, and that's good enough for now. I also need to set up the two SPST switches I bought to make entering learning mode easier (right now I did it with crimp-on QD connectors, but that's only temporary).

Looking back, I'm not sure how I'd have gotten the module tucked up into the headliner had I stayed with my original piece, though - the dome light hole might have been too small. Fortunately, my original liner was shot and I had the 97+ one ready to go in, so now I just have to drop the front domelight (which is bigger on later models) to open my "service port".

Since I saw over in the other forum you're coming to NACFest, you're welcome to track me down and have a look.

You shouldn't have to use it afterall. I found some wires going into the fuse panel under the dash that were all melting together. I wasn't sure what they do, so I just unplugged them from the fuse panel and wrapped the ends in scotch tape. It still starts so I'm good to go - and no more burning smell.

So I think the biggest thing I gotta get done now is to make up some nut strips and unibody tie-ins for the rear bumper and trim down/install the front bumper bracket things. Otherwise the gear break-in is going pretty well and all should be good (I hope).

Oh and I also need to get a carpet installed up front to kill some of the heat from the trans tunnel, etc. No way in hell I want to deal with a 6+ hour drive without it. :laugh3: Would be different if I had AC to combat the heat but I may or may not have killed my AC with a drill while installing my swaybar disconnect straps years back

Oh and a radio would be nice too. Hopefully stopping by the JY tomorrow and going to see what head units they have pulled and such. Found a couple on CL for $50 that I might buy if the JY doesn't have anything for me. So tomorrow might be carpet/radio/headliner/etc day. And an alignment. The right hand pull is starting to get old fast.

Crap... added to my list yesterday.

* 4WD swap (haha, right, only if I manage to rent a garage somewhere)
* find out how I lost 1-2 pints of brake fluid over the last week, fix it. I think it's a flare on the top of the prop valve but I'm not sure.
* figure out why exactly my power steering pump started whining loudly after I ran St Anthony Street and Swan Ave last night (laugh all you want, after the last few thunderstorms we've had, they're green trails!) and maybe convince myself to care enough to fix it

The swamp ass meter was at its most highest levels here over the weekend. I was working out in front of my house & had to take numerous breaks, so I did not turn into liquid. Jeep is just about ready, just need to change the oil & re-check everything next weekend.

Thanks for reminding me... gotta do that "change Oil" thing too...

Not gonna get my traction bar done before NAC-Fest, just no time right now. The shackle re-location brackets are modded and will be welded in place though.

I gotta throw like 1500lbs of stuff in the jeep... just replaced the unit bearings today in the parking lot at work. I am buying it new balljoints for the passenger side tomorrow (the ones in it right now have some pretty scary play in them, the wheel was flopping back and forth a little when I tightened the lugnuts on it and the knuckle moves up and down about 1/8"!) and then I just gotta put the tow hooks on and build the trailer hitch for the back.
