I'm looking to pick up an older beater truck just to drive around town and to and from work so I can quit DDing my XJ. I'm talking with a guy that has a 1992 Toyota SR5 pickup that looks to be straight, rust free and still runs strong (according to him, I haven't seen it yet). The only issue I've uncovered so far is that he has removed the cat. He lives in a county with no emissions, lucky him.

How big a deal is it to install a cat? I've priced them out from about $50 to $150. If I can talk him down to cover the cost of a cat and labor to install it I figure it might be a decent deal...

Not a big deal for a exhaust shop to put one on. Decide where to place it. cut out pipe and weld the cat in. my guess would be 2 hrs labor.

Yeah, not a big deal at all - just the cost.

Does it need to be welded? No, but it seals better and may help hold the exhaust in place and straight better if ya do. But, if you can measure the outside diameter of the existing exhaust pipe (and it's in good, solid condition) you may be able to find an aftermarket cat at the autoparts stores that has pipe on the ends with an inside diameter that would fit over the pipe where you cut it. Make sense?

Otherwise, I know a couple good muffler shops:

Its not a big deal at all. Buy the cat, cut out a section of pipe, and weld it in place. Easy stuff.
In fact, you're not really that far away from me, and I have to do exhaust work on my truck and two of my friends' trucks... you could bring it over and we could knock it out pretty quick.

Thanks for the input guys, but I was too slow. I got in touch with the guy again yesterday afternoon and he had already sold it. Bummer... I'll keep lookin'.

Most of those old TOY turks are perfect for that kind of thing. I love my old 89 for a DD and parts rig and what not. I like the little 4 banger over the v6. mines just a single cab shot box but gets the job done. It was that white one I had when I picked up that BB lift from you out buy the bassproshop that one time. Great little running trucks. even if it has high miles and hasn't had the toyota service tune up they will go for miles and can have that tune up check thing done at a fair price. Fair as in how many miles you can get out of it in the long run. my 4 banger 89 toyota is right under 300k miles and going strong. All it needs is a new windshield and some new shocks. Both are going on after winter.

Jawa, I'm close and you can always bring stuff over and get it welded.
