I have one out of an 80 something if your interested. Its got over 100000 but it was in good working order when pulled

i need it be a direct bolt in, i think the earlier models came with a lower spline count

The spline count only changes between engines. The 4cly has a 21 spline input and the 6cly has 23. The main difference is if the jeep had a vacuum disco front axle there was a slight change to the case, but this one is not from a disco axle

so you're saying that regardless of year if they're from a 6cyl non-disco it'll bolt straight up

act tony is wrong. they earlier model aw4 uses 21 spline and the later uses 23 spline. as i know for a fact my 90 242 wouldnt interchange with my buddies 95. we had to change the input shaft on the 242 to match his 23 spline aw4 where my aw4 was 21 spline.

Thats the first time I've heard that. I had a 231 out of an 89 with an aw4 and it was 23 spline.

New Process NP242 Select Trac: 2-speed, chain-driven, part or full-time 4WD. 2.72:1 low-range. 87-01 models with 4.0l I-6/AW4 automatic transmission only. 87-89 21-spline input, 90-01 23-spline input. The shift indicator pattern is 2WD > 4 high range part-time > 4 high range full-time > Neutral > 4 low range part-time.

My 231 must have been late in the 89 production year because it was 23 spline. I'm not sure about the 242 I have. If your interested I can pull it from the aw4 its hooked too and take a look at the spline count. Sounds like rms692 might have a lower mileage one for you anyways

my 90 and the 89 i had where both 21 spline. dont know if it just varies from jeep to jeep but my 90 and the 90 i pulled one out of in the junk yard where both 21 spline. i have put a few in mine
