I am looking for a roll cage for my 1999 xj 4 door 4.0. It is used only for everyday driving. I would like some roll over and crash protection for my wife and kids.
I want it to be safe in a crash so I guess I would need good pads on the roll bar for safety.

Any opinions on what are my best options, I live in New Jersy so I like to take it to someone close or buy a good kit and take it to a welder.

By the way I have 108,000 miles and have never had to take it to a mechanic, just miner repairs like front brakes, headlamp switch, tune up parts and tires.

Thanks

Thanks

I've considered this also. Though I never did fab a cage into my xj here are some things i thought about. Steel is heavy. With 4 ppl in my jeep, the brakes suck and so does acceleration. I'm not gonna add another 300-500 lbs in roll-cage (read: top heavy, raises center of gravity) and still expect to drive it on the road. Off road is a different story. Great idea. at slows speeds. But check the payload on your xj...about 1100 lbs I think. I dunno, weighing my options I decided not too.

Also, if you do decide to build one, weigh the pros and cons of an exocage...protect the unibody and yourself, versus just yourself. Exos are the way to go, as is evidence by many of the pros installations-Peterson's 4wheel offroad, etc. Plus then you don't have to worry about fitting the cage and padding inside the jeep, though my guess is that you'd have alot of wind noise at high speeds...

try triangulating an exo-cage to make it safe to the occupants, you will then turn it into an endo cage( or a massive tubular body). I think that a good internal cage will make your XJ safer in any terrain/situation and it will stiffen your rig up considerably if done properly. Boy this sure wnt off topic, sorry never been to Jersey:), good luck

Thanks for the posts, they gave me alot of food for thought. I think I just want something that will protect the roof from caving in, in case of a roll over. Maybe just a single bar or a double bar that is light weight.

Does anyone one know of anything out their that gives just basic roof cave in protection for normal everyday driving not of roading.

best regards

There are several shops (actually dozens) that could do this in Jersey. Personally I'd lean towards a shop that has experience with jeep/truck cages.

There are also bolt in interior kits available. This may meet your requirements and you could do it yourself. Certainly wouldn't provide the best protection, but would be simple, fairly inexpensive and (I think) provide the roof protection you are seeking.

There are several shops in south jersey, but I don't specifically know who they would be.

My pick in Northern Jersey would be 'Total Performance' in Mahwah. They have a lot experience with jeeps. They built a roll cage for me years ago for a Honda, which was nicely done.

Another possibility would be OK4WD in Stewartsville NJ. I know they have a tube bender for exhausts, but I’m not sure if they can bend heavier tube.

There is also a shop in Easton PA (a few miles from OK4WD, that I’d bet could do a good job on this. All the work I’ve seem them do is outstanding. I’ll have to check to find their name.

Hope this helps,
Kent :)

If your interested in getting a cage built or want to talk about different designs for cages, give us a call at the shop and we'll be more than happy to walk you through the process.

We have done many cages for the guys on this board as well as many other clubs as well. We also have AWS certified welders so you know the cage will be done the right way the first time. If you would like pictures or want to talk further, email me at matt@trcoffroad.com and we can talk further.

Though we are not located in NJ we are just over the border in Slate Hill, NY

Actually not in Easton. I don't know whether they can handle cages, but if they can't, I'd bet they could provide a quality referral to a shop that could.

Do a search on the S&W race cars cage in the Mod Tech section of this site. You'll find a lot of useful info.

I'm curious what have you heard badly, or what have your experiences been?

I can't say I've 'never' had issues with this shop, but I don't know of any other shops in northern Jersey that I would even consider recommending.
