While organizing the garage I found a bunch of short pieces of pine 1x10, that have been there for years. I used those for the bottoms, and some more plywood scraps for the sides. Inside dimensions are 7"h x 9"w x 18"l, 3/4" ends and 1/4" sides. I notched the ends to receive an optional 1/2" plywood top, and added some 1/4" maple strips to re-inforce the sides. $10 for the basic box, $2 for a top, $2 for the hand holes like the other boxes I did.
$4 for a hinge with chain like on this one from the last batch...

The tops fit inside and flush with the sides, the hinge would go on top opposite the finger hole
