As unbiased as I can be, he was giving a speech at a college and made the comment that if you study hard and do you're homework you'll be ok, if you don't, you'll end up in Iraq. The video/audio is on Foxnews. You'd have to listen/watch the video to get the full context of it. Just a shatty comment. I'll is if I can find a link.

You're right, and no; it wouldn't make me sleep any better. This guy is supposed to be a presidential canidate. I just think it's sad that he has this total disregard for our troops, whatever the context may have been. If he feels that way, it's cool. its amazing what he said but i think it reflects the view of a lot of people who don't speak. however, i do not believe the troops consist of people who are uneducated. there are people there who were called from places of work where they held high positions as well. i can't see how Kerry calling our young folks who are doing their job as instructed can be uneducated.
Kerry probably does not know anyone who has family doing their military job in iraq.
that was a bad move on his part. like mama used to say, " if you cant say anything nice, sometimes its best not to say anything."
mama may have been right this time Mr Kerry.

Well not to put anyone down, but here is my experience. I certainly can't speak for every service member, or how the troops are today. I served from 85 to 91 and he's right. The general population of our troops are not the cream of the crop of the uppwardly mobile to say the least. That includes me. It is made up of a lot of people that didn't have many choices. That does not mean that our troops are not hard working, intelligent, patriotic, loyal, moral, decent people. I learned a good trade, met a lot of skilled, intelligent, people that I would have been willing to sacrifice my life for cause they would have done the same. However, compared to the general population I also met alot of unskilled, unmotivated folks with now where else to go. Frankly, I was shocked by that. I thought it was going to be the best of the best and all that Marine Corps commercial stuff. I'm not saying I'm right or wrong, I'm just telling you my experience. I don't regret serving and have always been pro millitary, but if my family would have had the money to send me to school, I would have gone. And not that I like Kerry, but don't forget he has actually been shot at. Our current Comander in Chief avoided that cause his family had the means to do so. Just an observation

I agree. As a vetran (86-92), I can remember hearing people talk about how they had no hopes for college, so they enlisted to get an education. The rich won't join the military to get a higher education.
At least Kerry has been to war. Bush has only sent others to war.
I do think that Kerry should never have said what he said. It really made him sound like an ahole, but it is in the past. Move on.
But the republican party is going to take Kerry's words, and drag them out until the elections. And they will say that this is how all democrats are because they have nothing else to complain about. Whatever!
In all of this I just want Bin Laden. I don't care about Saddam Hussain.

He is a no mind, who married an heiress and became a legend in his own mind. Classic example of the *Class* think of many who live the life of the seriously rich. Many inherited (or married) the wealth and actually did very little to accumulate it, which probably required a good deal of luck, cunning and effort.
But the fact is, they got it, along with an inflated input into most things that govern the rest of us.
My son was asking the other day, how it would be to be seriously rich. My answer was, the world could do without many of the drones that run things, but would be in trouble in short order, if the plumbers, electricians, carpenters, auto mechanics, Seargants and others suddenly disappeared.
What gets me, is the guy actually feeling competant to comment on anybody else intelligence. Knowing what the IQ requirements where for Officers ( barely above average). I häve no doubt in my mind, that many of the line troops have 20 to 30 point higher IQ's than many of the officers, they are sprinkled throughout the military (highly intelligent by many standards, without the inflated ego). Many of them choose to do the dirty work, just because it needs to be done and is largely more rewarding, than playing politics at the officers club.
Not saying there aren't some good officers out there, but Kerry reminds me of the other sort. Good at self promotion, good at politics and good for taking the credit when things go well and shifting the blame when things go poorly.
I meant Ronald Regan on a few occasions. A couple of chance encounters, that impressed me with his humanity. Guy had no airs, he would look at you, not through you. Even if you were covered in dirt and grime and hadn't had a bath in awhile ( I was just returning from a three day hunt one time, had just finished snaking some pipe through a cellar another time).
A simple question, your car is broke down, cell phone is dead and you are trying to wave down some help. If Bush wasn't President, would he stop, likely. Would Kerry stop? Carter would likely stop, as would Regan and a few others. Would Hillary stop?
Funny story, I was broke, out of gas and late for duty in Kentucky (I was in the military at the time). Truck sitting beside the road in nowhere Kansas. A motor home pulls up and stops, body guard/driver gets out and asks me what the trouble is, red faced I explained, that I was broke and lost track of the fuel in my saddle tanks (carried a hundred gallons) and what position the tank lever was in. Over estimated my fuel supply. Took a three hundred mile detour I shouldn't have, to pick up another soldier. Guy goes back in the motor home and a guy in a wheel chair comes out, asks me how much money I needed, gives it to me, wishes me luck, smiles and leaves. Found out later the guys name was Oral Roberts, a famous Evangilist of the time.
Ever since, I've given most politicians, the would they stop test, just to judge in my own mind, what kind of human being they are behind the image.

Kerry had a bad rep with the wardroom and the goat locker at coronado back in 69, never associated the name till they publicized it during the elections last go round.
Intelligence has NOTHING to do with becoming an officer, the Navy, Air Force Coast Guard and Marine corps only requires a 4 year degree. I think the guard is up to 2 years of college. I took the test in the guard, found 4 questions with no correct answers [electronics section], 5 questions on music and composers and no questions assessing Honesty, Honor or Integrity, sure opened my eyes, I passed on the program. Personally I don't think you should be allowed to get a comission until you have served at least 4 years enlisted and made E5 the honest way and that includes service academy graduates...

Kerry doesn't HAVE to apologize. He's a part of the left wing elite, they can do whatever they want and the news outlets soft peddle it. If a right wing politico said something of the sort he would be villified by all media and everyone on the Left from the Pages on up in Congress would be red faced demanding an apology for such an unforgivable comment. Whether you vote one side of the aisle or another is irrelevant. This is how the political topography is. Not pretty, not reasonable, not fair. As former pro wrestler Ric Flair used to say "Whether you like it or don't like it learn to love it" Far from ideal but still the best place to live on this planet. (Tip search jeep drives on water on Youtube! we could all use some thing fun and interesting to look at about now) Back to my seat! LOL

The real tragedy of this situation is the fact that the very lives of our sons and daughters have become a political football. While I agree (to some extent) that Iraq needed to be bitch slapped, I absolutely find it criminal to send these brave souls out with nothing more than bullseyes painted on their back. If you go to war (espesially after what we were told about Iraq) then GO TO WAR! Don't ask for permission from "The World Community", or worry about political fallout due to unpopular tactics. War is won by the most commited and sometimes that is accomplished by tactics that are unpleasent and uncomfortable and yes, it WILL sometimes result in the deaths of the innocent. 9/11, the Cole and on and on......makes me sick.
And as to the topic at hand...look at the source. 'nuff said.

I don't like R's or D's and to be left to vote only the extreme's of either really disheartens me. I feel as many American's are very Moderate people would like to make a well thought decision on what ever's up for discussion. That said a politician put it well in the recent day's, didn't Kerry already cost us (democrats) one election? And if that was an insult directed to the president (as he state's it was) he should go back to college and re-learn how to give speeches. When I hear it, read it, watch it clearly it sound's like an insult directed at the world's bravest. Like XJEtreme said keep the Army and those who serve out of politics unless you're part of the civilian leadership. I hate election time, you'd think there was some type of famine going on and these people will be forced to eat root's and drink muddy water if they don't invest millions for a job that pay's 160K a year.

has anyone seen the whole speech? before he said the one thing everyone is seeing/hearing on TV/radio he was talking about this war the president got us into. that line was directed strictly towards the presidents actions and mentality. He called the president an uneducated idiot... Im not defending this retard(before I get emails about mentally challenged people, I say he is retarded because he does the same thing over and over and obviously doesnt learn)we all know Kerry is a moron, but no one is dumb enough to take a shot at our military members. After this he said he will not apologize and went on to say about the comment of our president, again, He's an idiot, I know. In his stupidity he didnt realize that he did not clarify what he had said ENOUGH. the only things people know about it is the one line against the President and the one line where it sounds like he wont apologize to our military members.
If you want to call him an idiot, by all means we will back you on this, but if you take things out of context it makes you look equally stupid!
Im not coming to his defense, Im just not playing the political game of blowing things out of puportion for a few votes.
Before I get called an anti war tree hugging liberal I would like you to know I spent my 4 in the USMC, and am now going into the Army. I dont believe in the War and I dont like our current president. I could have a well paying job in the civilian world, but there are a few perks to being in the military. I dont mind being in the front lines, Im not a hero by any means but it does take a certain kind of person to join in this day and age.

First: Of topic, in2fords My mom lived in Makaha while teaching at UH, GREAT times surfing that beach!!! Nice point break!
Second: On topic, Context has nothing to do with his statement. There is NO context in which THAT statement would or could be considered appropriate. If he, or any other political pundit would suggest a plausible exit strategy and or viable solution to what amount to a shooting gallery using our brave sons, daughters, family and friends as the "ducks" I would listen and support them. As far as I can see, no such animal exists. But what is the most disturbing, is the fact that the Republicrats will continue to use these people as the issue de' jour to get re/elected while offering no substance for a solution.
Do I agree with the war, not so much. The ROE suck and so does our policy in that region. Period end. But, you want to impress me during this "election" season, try this:
Speak about a REAL exit plan, change the ROE and deployment rotation so we are not sending these people there with little hope of victory and IF you really want to impress me, forgo your congressional pay toward proper equipment for these, our bravest and bightest....ya' know, our future. I won't hold my breath though. :sure:

Here is my .02. It is real funny how everything looks so different under a microscope. Then put a red filter or a blue filter over it and the picture changes dramaticly. Context does matter. Ones own experience does change perception. I took it to mean something else and I was way off base. And no I won't appologize:D
Everyone starts from a position and then uses whatever is at hand to solidify that position. If you don't like Kerry, goody for you. I am certainly not impressed with him. However, his family had money. Not Hines money, but enough to keep him out of Viet Nam. He chose to serve his county, IN COUNTRY. I respect him for that. When he got back, he chose to exersize his right to free speech by speaking out about the war. History has proven him and others they were right. He never said Nam was wrong because the troops didn't know how to fight. History has proven that Nam was wrong because politicians were using the millitary to fight a war of ideas instead of using the millitary to fight for territory. Wrong tool for the job.
The exact same thing is going on today. Our troops are dying in a war of ideas instead of allowing them to do what they are trained so well to do, capture countrys. They are floundering in the police action in Iraq, while Bin Ladin runs free in Afganistan. We know where he is at. You don't think we don't have a capable military that could surround him and kill every living thing in the middle? Of course we do. I respect Kerry's service the same as I respect ever fighting soldier. I respect him for speaking out about this war. I believe he has shown he is incompetent to lead this country simply by loosing to Bush, and being wishy washy. I saw an interview with him where he said he was going to take no prisoners, so to speak, and kick butt. The problem John is that you should have known that BEFORE last election. Next!
He in no way meant to insult the troops. He is just a poor politician. Stop taking extremist views and disecting every little word. And would he stop to change your tire? Give me a break. If a Texan can kiss a black baby, a blue blood can change a tire. They are politicians, they would sell their mothers for a vote. The funny thing is that if the left critisizes anything, the right immediatly jumps on them and say they are just bleeding heart cry babies and they have no spine. So one turn deserves the other. Did that mean Mr. Kerry hurt your little feelings? Do you need a hug? Get over it already. If you disagree, don't vote for him. I know I won't. He has the right to free speech. A right he put his life on the line for. Our present Commander in Chief chose to serve his country on a bar stool, and that is why we are stuck in Irak. Deal with it.

It was a botched joke, if you look at his prepared remarks it was supposed to be somthing quite different than what actually came out of his mouth. Kerry is a terrible joke teller he is usually about as eloquent in speeking as Mr. Bush is and it was no suprise to me that he said something stupid again. He wasn't insulting the troops, the man is a decorated war hero for crying out loud. This is silly season in politics and the GOP jumped all over this because it creates a Bush vs. Kerry battle that distract undecided voters and we all know who wins that fight. Niether man is running for anything this year and this is a distraction from the real issue, the war in Iraq. I despise the war, I believe it's time to declare victory and leave. I know dozens of people I went to high school with and go to college with that are over in the sandbox in harms way and most of them are tired of it because no progress is being made. We can't do anything about Iraqies killing each other and being self destructive, there is very little we can do. Federalizing the country sounds good on paper but when you realize that most of the countries population is concentrated in three ethnicaly diverse cities it makes deviding the country not very feasable.
If Kerry would have said this next month it would barely have gotten any news coverage. For the next week remember to take everything said by politicians and pundits with a grain of salt. Everything will calm down and people won't be so overly sensative about everything after the elections. Then the lame duck congress will get back to doing nothing until Jan. Vote for the candidate you believe will represent you the best, don't let a senator not even up for reelection affect your vote.

I'm sorry, should I have put some pictures in for you? That's funny, I didn't see you make the same comment to the other long posters in this thread. Oh, it's OK if you agree with them. I get it. Thank you for your valued input.:bs:

I was from a moderatly wealthy family, was decorated in Vietnam, volunteered (there is an RA before my first service number).
My experiences in Vietnam lead me to believe, the troops with a variety of life experiences, generally performed as well, if not better than the ones with higher education. What you learn in school is often pretty darned irrelevant in combat. Intelligence can also be largely irrelevant, to the amount of schooling a person has. They have to be trainable, to be an asset, but they don't have to be college grads. Your choice, a hillbilly that can shoot straight and doesn't freak out at the site of a little carnage or a college grade who can't find Iraq on a map anyway and can likely quote Keats.
I never begrudged the troops or civilians that managed to avoid service there choice of a life path. Not everybody is cut out to be a warrior.
But on the flip side, I always brisstled at the thought, that college somehow made a person superior, worth more or more preferable than a person who chose to serve, while others were studying.
That college grads are in someway superior to those who aren't, is a kind of *class* think that I have always found offensive.

Look. I'm sorry if I can string together words to articulate thoughts I may have that are longer than a single sentance. I may be involvled in politics but I don't feel the need to condence my thoughts into "one liner" sound bytes. Maybe that is Kerry's problem. If your response to someones reasoning for thinking the way they do is "yeah?" then you shouldn't concern yourself with any thing political, there are all ready enough people like that involved in making policy descisions for our country. If you can't objectively look at the situation and see that both the left and the right made serious errors in judgement on this issue then you are beyond help.
