How much shims to use?

Is there a general rule how much shims in the rear to use after lifting? I have the c8.25 with about 6.5 lift. The kit did not come with shims but I know I will need it. Or is this something I just eyeball. I also do have a CV shaft.

I have a SYE, 231 transfer case, and 8.25" rear axle with a RE 3.5" lift kit. 6 degree shims put my pinion exactly 2 degrees less than my driveshaft angle, which is where you want it to be. My pinion is 15 degrees and my driveshaft is 17.

You'll need to measure the angles of your driveshaft and pinion, then take a wild guess on what size shim you need. Remember, the driveshaft angle lessens as the pinion is raised, so the shim won't be the difference between the two angles.

I think I have a pair of 6deg shims that I'm not using..
