Hey XJ'ers
I am moving to the Canadian Arctic, I will be rolling my way up there through the US, which is the shortest route to go through. I plan on leaving on Nov 16th, I should be arrving in the evening around 5-6pm.
I am going to spend the day in Chicago. I will be staying overnight and want to see some places and stuff. I never been so I am newbie at this. So here are some questions, If you want to pm me anything that will be great too!
What is a cool place to see in Chicago?
Where are some off road shops/retailers in Chicago? and where are they located?
Where is the best place to stay? cheap, I am on a budget!
Any info will be good and maybe a light wheeling spot to try out will be so much appreciated!
Thanks !

Whenever we've had family out from Iowa we've taken them to down town Chicago and just wandered around. The only place weve delt with for parts for our Jeeps has been Lou's Sales and Service, they were one of the first dealers to sell Civilian Jeeps and sold them till Chrysler (pre DCX) pulled their frachise and gave it to another, much larger Chrysler/Plymouth/Buick/Deawoo dealer in, I think, '97 or '98. They're still one of the better places to get repair/maintence Jeep/AMC parts at with probably one of the more knowlageable parts guys in the area.

Now that right there is funny!
There are none!!!
But seeing how you're moving to the artic circle...
Visiting Chicago in November is a comparable weathering experience...
I dunno... I'm a Chicago lifer and the coolest stuff downtown is pricey...
The lakefront in November is uninspired and drab...
but Lincoln Park Zoo is free!
Navy Pier is a tourist trap but it is indoors with tons of shops...
Walking up and down the mag mile - Michigan ave is overrated but it can be interesting, hell they even have carriage rides downtown.
Food and drink is where it's at...
I would suggest you check out http://metromix.chicagotribune.com/they list tons of stuff

There are really no Malls in the city....
You could check out Water Tower Place, not bad...but it is really just a mall.
Walk Michigan from the river north and back, take a carriage ride at the water tower, visit Navy Pier. Dress warm...it WILL be cool.

I'd recommend checking out the world's largest gay bar, but the Cub's season ended in May and Wrigley's empty believe it or not this time of year. The Field Museum is always a good stop if you have time. If it's clear a trip to the top of Sear's Tower is good. There are one or two (thousand) pizza places in Chicago, I'm partial to Gino's. Couple of good blue's bars if staying overnight.

I haven't been there in over a decade, but if you're into railroading at all the Science and Industry Museum redid their train display a few years back and it looks cool on the news. I'd even consider both the Hancock and Sears if the weather's good. Like Rev Den said it will be cold and it will be windy at the street level.
