Distributor Noise

This morning I found my engine noise is comming from the distributor when the engine is cold. After running for a while (not sure how long) the noise quit, but I'd like to nip this in the bud

I assume there is a bearing on the distributor shaft that is going out and I further assume I'll need to replace the entire assembly. Any comments or suggestions? Any ideas about how this would happen and how long I've got?

Remove the distributor cap and take a look inside it. If it looks like the wear grooves are excessively deep and there's a lot of slop in the distributor shaft due to wear, it's probably time for a new distributor.
