WON"T START, HELP!

I have a '91 Cherokee 4.0, 6 cyl., new battery, plenty of juice, but nothing happens when you turn the key, except for guages moving, etc. It's almost like the starter is disconnected. It happened 3 days ago and I replaced the starter relay and it started right up. It lasted a few days, but did it again last night and the relay is not the problem.

I need a new starter. I talked to a mechanic who said to beat on the starter because it probably has a flat spot. It worked and I'm off to get a new one.
