i went to ocotillo wells for the new years, and man was it a great time. but at the same time, i learned through observation that alcohol and stupidity and off road vehicles dont mix...
luckily i made it unscathed, but in the 48 hours i was there, a guy about 100 yards from my RV rolled his jeep, snapped his neck and killed him self. and two guys that were in my group got deep into the booze at a local tavern, hopped in a rhino, and drove off a 10 foot creek wall at 50 miles an hour, only to meet another 10 foot creek wall awaiting them at the other side. that resulted in a collapsed lung, internal bleeding, and 8 broken bones between the two...
kind of a wake up call for me, feeling of invincibility= gone.
hope everyone made it out of the holidays ok and be safe

But drinking and driving don't mix.

Not to sound cold, but they caused there own problems by making dumb ass decisions, just happy they did not kill some little kids while they were being a-holes.

That's unfortunately a repeated story, every holiday weekend out in the desert someone does some stupid sh!t while drinking and either gets themselves or someone else hurt. I am glad you are using this as a learning example. It just ain't worth drinking and driving/riding.

sucks to hear that a life was lost. Not a good way to start off the year and feel bad for his family. Prime examples of why alcohol isn't allowed on the trails.

I'm sorry to hear this, but I to have no heart for someone that drinks and drives/rides, but I am thankful they only hurt them self's and not others.

There was no mention of alcohol in the fatal incident. May have been just a very unfortunate incident. You can roll a vehicle while stone cold sober. Ask me how I know.
Condolences.

I stay away from Glamis and Ocotallo in general. Too many darwin award winners out there, ESPECIALLY on holidays. It's an excuse to get even more wasted, rowdy, and do stupid things which usually end in injury or death. New years and Halloween are probably the worst out there, and I won't go near it. It sucks that people have to ruin it, but I'm not too upset about it. Sand is for cat s**t, rocks are for Jeeps.

No offence, and not that I'm supporting drinking and driving, but 9 times out of 10 in cases like these, it's not the alcohol that causes the problem, it's the absolute stupidity of the people involved. Take away the alcohol and these same idiots would be doing the same thing...now if you could just make a law against stupidity, you'd save thousands of lives....of course, without them eliminating themselves, you'd also have a lot of idiots still running around so it's a give and take in my opinion. =)

Even when you are sober it can be dangerous. This is a good post to stop for a second and think.

I think people missed the point of this thread. It was a "wake-up call" for shortbuss.
It's a good thing that you came to this realization before you were handed a Darwin Award.
Sometimes all it take for someone to reflect on his/her life is seeing someone else critically injured or die.
For the rest of us, it may take a kick in the a$$ by reality called Death.
