OK, well im going to 16's because i want to buy the wilwood 12 1/2 brakes for my XJ. Which style of wheels should i stay away from and How much backspacing should i get? i heard from a friend to get steel becuase the tire gets alot more grip on it but i like the teflon wheels. What should i do? Also should i get a smaller tires? i have 35's with no cutting of fenders. I want to be able to stop when A**holes are not paying attion on I5"you guys know what im talking about" lol:flamemad:

also what does gun drilling an axle shaft do for the shaft?

Makes it weigh less.
Gun drilling is when the center of the axleshaft is drilled out (to sort of make it like a hollow pipe) to save some weigh on race car axles where weight is important, It does weaken the shaft!
I can't see the need for it on a Jeep & have never heard it being done on a Jeep axle.

You still got the stock axles? that's a lot of $$ to drop on stock axles. To me not even close to being worth it...............

stay away from the teflon, its just a powder coating and its expensive and will flake off, as far as 16" tires you can run 315/75-16 wich is a 35" by 12.5 - 16, or a better cchoice(sp) whould be a 295/75-16 OR go to 17" and run the 295/75-17, and just get some white or black steel from allied, they charge 15~25 more for custom backspace, not too bad

This is an odd assortment of questions, but I will take a shot at trying to answer give the lack of info.

1. IF you have 35's, and you need larger than 15's I would get 17's and not 16's. I think you will find a better selection of tires for this size rim.

2. Back spacing. Normally 4.0 is about perfect. 3.75-4.25 usually works great.

3. wheel material? Aluminum or Steel. My preferance would be aluminum, Forged if cost wasnt an issue. Cast is "normal". Steel are fine, but are heavier. Are you considering bead locks? Finish of wheels is totally personal preferance (i.e, painted, polished, chromed, black chrome, teflon, powder coated, etc)

4. Anybody that tells you that a "teflon" wheel will not hold the tire as well is NOT the kind of person you want to take advice from.

Hope that helps,
Thanks for your service!!

I don't have any hard facts, but I imagine that most aluminum rims aren't much lighter that steelies. Think of the thickness/volume to an aluminum wheel. Also, when running 40 lb tires, what's an extra pound or two in a rim? That just makes no sense to me. Instead of 47 lbs of unsprung weight you have 45? It seems irrelevant and trivial.

Personally, I run steelies because they're stronger and when I do damage them, I can just hammer them back.

Nothing is long distance in Iraq. Make some comm friends. DSN is your friend. You can call any base switch in the states then dial out locally.

o i got ways to call but i hate the reaction time makes me feel dumb lol. I think instead of dealing with wasting money ill just get the 11 inch rotors instead if the 12 1/2 if they dont fit

Do some research I know how it feels over there lots of money to spend(though still underpaid) . Since you can't buy anything except dvd's and Maxim.

Prioritize your upgrades, brakes are a great thing to upgrade but there are ways to do it that wont waste your money. in addition to that you're going to snap a few axles and say "F this I should of changed axles but now I spent a shitload of money on wilwood crap."
I would focus on what you want to do with your rig.
