Shiny? I don't bother. Clean? Simple Green for routine cleaning, LPS Precision Clean for deep cleaning (like when I've got a leak, as opposed to getting rid of road crud.)
Don't know why anyone would want a shiny engine - by leaving the surfaces in their natural state, I can spot pretty much any leak...

black magic makes a 2-in-1 engine degreser/shine
it stink to the high heavens but works well...took all the mud and crap off my engine and trust me when I say my engine was coated...
also after that and a nice wash my electric fan didn't kick on as much and she ran a little cooler!!

Simple Green. DO NOT spray the engine with water, ever. Apply the Simple Green, let it soak 10-15 minutes and then let the water hose run over the motor to clean it. The sensors do not like water and will fail if sprayed with water.

I routinely hit my engine with Castrol SuperClean. Leave it a few minutes and I wash it down with hot water from my hose, not from a pressure washer. The only sensor you have to watch is the TPS. Don't hit the O2 if it is hot.

I use the castrol super clean as well, i do spray water but a very light mist and only after covering things that you don't want to get water in... like your alternator. My jeep's engine was gross when i got it, now it looks almost new.

Gloss black paint...........
No but seriously, I use Mother's Back to Black on stuff like the airbox and hoses. I use mag and aluminum cleaner on the intake. That's about it, what I can't clean I paint.

I use the shower or fan settings on my nozzle, don't use a Jet or something too powerful like that......try not to get the computer wet for too long either, just a quick splash will do.
