I just got a 97 XJ, 4.0/AW4/231 with 139,000
The starter in my 96 w/ almost 180k sounded "normal" and like most other Jeeps i've heard
From searching I learned a lot of good things i'll need to know if I need a new one/replacing it, but not anything about this noise
The 97 is sort of high pitched and whiny, it takes a little longer for the engine to turn over(maybe 1/2 a second to 1 second) and once it does I can hear it running for about a second in the back round
so basicly it sounds like crap, but I heard a ZJ yesterday that sounded about the same, so i'm wondering if its normal, or if I should be carrying a hammer
