View Full Version : Cool OSS Driving Game

Anyone tried VDrift (http://vdrift.net) yet?

It's pretty cool. It may not be the most pretty from a graphics point of view. I'm not a gamer so I haven't kept up with all the pretty graphics.

It's fun.

Been having a blast "manhandling" the Cobra and the GT40 around the 'Ring. Even running the Cobra sideways and drfited the entire course I'm still a minute faster than using the S2000. :D The Cobra definitely needs a fifth gear...

Anyway, enough time wasting, time to get out on the tractor.

how do you download???

click on the link above, then click on the link next to the operating system you're running. This will take you to a site of mirrors. Select one (generally one in the same country as you works best) and the download should begin.

Having a blast with this.

Started modifying the cars. Still working with the Cobra at LeMans and at the 'Ring. I prefer the longer tracks.

Trying to get a good set of gear box ratios and final drive ratio that makes use of the engine over the whole track is kinda hard. Using a Muncie M20 with 3.73 axle ratio at the moment.

Tried a Tremec 56 and a T5 but couldn't get a setup that I liked. 1st gear is pretty much useless with this car so I went back to a four speed and taller gearing - at least driving with the keyboard first is useless. The keyboard s 100% inputs. There is a fix for that in SVN but I haven't bothered with it.

Road Atlanta is a fun track too.

Love the way you can steer the car with the gas pedal. Getting the car four wheel drifting around the corners is fun. Who needs a hand brake when you've got a big block under the hood?

what program did you use to modify the cars...word pad or what, i cant fugure it out.

I might have to start 3d modeling again.

It's not working for me ...
I downloaded it, installed it, and when I try to run the game it goes to a screen with all the sponsors, then the V Drift game screen and then closes automatically... :dunno:

Ah, I was under the impression you could modify the vehicles in game.....lame lol.

And the clutch is retarted from the ol 82' Jetta I used to drive?

Sorry guys, it works fine on my Mac.

I'm really digging the "in-cockpit" view through the windshield ([F2] on the keyboard).

I'll try it on Linux and Windows later today if I can find the time.

For editing the cars:

- Create a copy of the car you want to modify. Do this by copying the car directory to a new directory in the same parent directory. Something like "cp -pR CO Cobra" would copy the generic CO Cobra to a new directory called Cobra. On Windows use Explorer or whatever you are used to.

- Go into the new Cobra directory and modify the about.txt to say Cobra instead of CO

- Rename CO.car to Cobra.car

- At the parent directory for the cars there is a file called "car_list.txt". Add your new car directory name to that.

If the cars menu appears screwed up and your car does not appear in the list then one of the steps above has been screwed up.

To modify the car, Cobra.car is where all the dynamic/static data lives. It's a plain text file so any plain text editor will work. On Windows, Notepad should work with the file without screwing it up. On UNIX/Mac vi rulez all. :) HEre is what the "as shipped" CO.car looks like:

http://moose.ca/content/CO.car

To modify the transmission, look for a section that looks like/similar to:

[ transmission ]
gears = 4
gear-ratio-r = -3.28
gear-ratio-1 = 2.18
gear-ratio-2 = 1.66
gear-ratio-3 = 1.36
gear-ratio-4 = 1.13
shift-delay = 0.06

Pretty straightforward. If you want to make the transmission look like a Tremec T56 substitute in the values so that it looks like:

[ transmission ]
gears = 5
gear-ratio-r = -3.28
gear-ratio-1 = 3.27
gear-ratio-2 = 1.98
gear-ratio-3 = 1.34
gear-ratio-4 = 1.00
gear-ratio-5 = 0.68
shift-delay = 0.06

I'm not sure what the shift-delay is. I'm going to assume it is a "fudge factor" to emulate the time it takes for an "uber driver" to shift that particular transmission. I've been leaving it alone.

The differential setting is pretty much the same deal:

[ differential ]
final-drive = 3.76
anti-slip = 600.0

Set the ratio to whatever you want. If you look at the gap in the transmission between 4th and 5th you'll see fifth gear is pretty much an economy gear. Ignore it for racing purposes. Even on the Mulsanne straight I find it is too tall to be useful without throwing the rest of the gearing out of whack if you change the diff ratio. Need to play with that more - maybe try to get the ratios for a Richmond or Tremec 6 speed into play.

Oh, some links to transmission tables:

http://moose.ca/node/43

http://moose.ca/node/28

I'm REALLY thinking it would be cool to get a XJ and some Jeep Speed tracks into this. If you look at the rest of the car description - you can change all the suspension settings, moments, etc., etc.

The FWD kids need handbrakes to drift. I don't want to get into another FWD vs RWD debate again, but if you've got a big block under the hood and a live rear end you've
already lost most of the younger crowd :D

Sounds like fun. Do they have a '69 Charger? Or maybe a

I may be mistaken but I thought I saw either a handbrake added OR a request to add one. That's the thing about open source software: missing a feature? Ask the devs to add it.

I thought it was funny that Muddy89XJ would be looking for an E-brake. Throttle steering is out of the question if there's no drive to the rear. Imagine applying brake when you're trying to drive through a corner. Anyway, the game looks cool. The Charger looks sweet!

I'll keep my trap shut FNO. I don't want to get flamed by the ricer crowd :firedevil

Different strokes for different folks. While I don't like FWD cars in general that doesn't mean I haven't been known to do the occasional hand brake turn in one every now and again.

Actually, come to think of it, haven't owned a FWD car since I sold my CRX Si in '96. It was a fun car. Being such a short wheelbase I found that hard turning and tapping the "real" brakes was enough to upset the handling from under to oversteer and get the tail coming around.

Well, you didn't have a choice...the car being FWD and all.

I'm not trying to get your goat, Moose. I was just trolling for the FWD kids to come defend their rice burners. It was just the E-brake comment made me laugh. You were discussing gear ratios and shift points and he's looking for the E-brake. That makes me laugh. I may be weird - it's hard for me to judge - but I prefer applying throttle in the turn, not brake.

No worries. I like fried rice but given my choice of poisons I'll go AWD or RWD every time.

Which car? Are you using joystick or keyboard or mouse?

Maybe for your sanity switch it to auto-clutch? This is how I'm driving. I don't see the point of emulating a clutch when playing with the keyboard. A clutch is such a hugely analog device it doesn't lend itself well to a keypress.

No, I have auto-clutch off.

Also graphics suck and the audio is terrible.....I have a Radeon X800 Pro and Creative Audigy 2 ZS 7.1 audio.....

Don't like the dynamic physics model though.

It might be Linux only.
