Alright Ladies and Gents, its time for some snow wheeling!

When: January 2, 2010- 9:30am
Where: Mormon Emigrant Trail

Rig Requirements: Tow points front and rear, fire extinguisher, battery hold down, tow straps (no hooks please!), lots of warm cloths, and make sure your s*** dont su**!

This will be a day run. We are going to meet at the Safeway off Highway 50 and Sly Park Road at 930am. Try not to be late, but we will wait for people as long as we can. Plan is to hopefully be on the trail by 10am.

This is where we are meeting
http://maps.google.com/maps?q=38.762693,-120.577237&num=1&t=h&sll=38.762115,-120.567098&sspn=0.03005,0.066047&hl=en&ie=UTF8&ll=38.761027,-120.570316&spn=0.015025,0.033023&z=16

Address for the Safeway:
6490 Pony Express Trail
Pollock Pines, CA 95726

Lat and Lon:
38.762693,-120.577237

This run is open to anyone and everyone. Be ready to get stuck, and remember it gets cold. Be prepared for anything. With luck we wont have to go very far for some snow.

Only an hour and 20 from my door. I'm in. Looking forward to it. Thanks for putting this together.

I can't wait to get back to California and get behind the wheel. Graduation is in May and I'll never have to see New York City again.

2.5 hours is a long time? :moon:

Leaving at 6:30 seems fine to me, but Im in winter ski mode, so getting up early and driving for a couple hours seem perfectly normal to me.

Come on, it will be fun!

Sure, as Matt said before:

This run is open to anyone and everyone. Be ready to get stuck, and remember it gets cold. Be prepared for anything. With luck we wont have to go very far for some snow.

Just please remember the simple REQUIREMENTS:

Rig Requirements: Tow points front and rear, fire extinguisher, battery hold down, tow straps (no hooks please!), lots of warm cloths, and make sure your s*** dont su**!

I think the only thing that really matters are tow points are a must! I would hate to leave a rig in the snow till spring!

Also if you are on stock sized tires and you have tire chains, bring them!! If you have not seen Slonopotam Bald Mt. video from a few years back, you should, you can really see how well chains help:

I think (and I might be wrong) what Matt is saying when he says "make sure your stuff don’t suck!" is for everyone to put the time in to make sure your rig is running good. Just do a good once over and check everything out, just so it is not going to make it 1 mile into the snow and blow up, then the rest of us spend the rest of the day pulling your junk off the trail. Or worse, more rigs break trying to pull the one broken one off the trail . . .

I think we all know parts break and bad things can happen, but if we all try our best to have a good running/well maintained rig it will make for a more enjoyable day. Right Nick?

I would like to say this is a family run, but it depends on the family. A bad word or two might be heard spoken in this group, but I think most here try hard to make everyone feel welcome.

That help?

Dave is right.

Wheeling is a lot more enjoyable if you dont break every 5 feet (Seems Ive done that on a couple trips though!) Obviously breaking is just part of the fun, but if you know your engine is about to blow, or your tranny likes to fall out, I would prefer you not come, at least as a driver.

However, I dont know of anyone thats Jeep is that bad so I wouldnt worry about it. I threw that in more as a "I told you so!" sort of thing.

If this was a snow run without snow I would be down to go, I hate the cold though. Have fun!
Come on Ed! You old guys need to get out and enjoy the fresh air. :D

I'd also add that people around here take the Tread Lightly thing seriously, which is really important. The people I've wheeled with have been good groups.
Everyone I have wheeled with on NAXJA takes great pride in wheeling responsibly and staying on the trail. Thats just one of the many reasons why this is such a great club.

In regards to bringing family, I dont see why not. Usually things stay in control, and especially with the possibility of women and children coming.

Shoot, Im dragging my dad along, and he acts like a 10 year old! Granted he looks like a skinny Santa, but he sure doesnt act his age.

Yes that is a problem

"Mormon Emigrant Trail from Highway 50 through to Highway 88 is closed. It is a Forest Road, not a CA State highway, so will not be listed on the Cal Trans road-condition phone number or website. Please Note: as the weather changes to winter and the road is closed, a snow berm may be placed on the Mormon Emigrant Trail at the Silver Fork junction. At that point, wheeled motor vehicle use such as cars, trucks, 4-wheel drives and all-terrain vehicles, is prohibited on the 5-mile section of MET from the Silver Fork Road junction to the Iron Mountain Sno-Park near Highway 88. During the winter season this section of the road is snow-covered and used by snowmobiles. "

Looking at a map, it seems that it is just the last 5 miles that are closed. Look at the google map on the first page, and follow the Mormon Emigrant trail all the way to Highway 88, and you will see Silver Fork Road. Im guessing its closed off there.

Anyone who has run this trail know if that is "far" or if that's just where the going gets fun?

If the snow level isnt good enough, I think I will call the run off. Its not worth it to drive up there and wheel in 1'' of snow. I might possibly postpone it since I go back to school around the 15th.

I will give the Forest Service a call tomorrow morning and see what they have to say about the trail being closed.

If there is snow, you won't get to that intersection. It is far. I would not call it fun, you can't roll backwards a 100 meters or so, like on Bald, but the scenery is really nice.

there are a few weather stations in the area, the trick is to find one at proper altitude, see for yourself, I look at >5000ft.
http://www.wunderground.com/US/CA/Pollock_Pines.html

Looks like raining/snowing right now, so far it could be an ice skating trip, not snow wheeling, but a lot could change in a week.

From: "Friends of Eldorado"
The Iron Mountain Information Station is the first weekend of the year. It is located 2.5 miles up Iron Mountain road. To get there, take highway 50 to Pollock Pines, get off at exit 60, Sly Park Road and turn right for 4.5 miles, then left on Mormon Emigrant trail (also know as Iron Mountain) 2.5 mile up there is an information kiok on the right side with a turn out.

This is a very popular play area in the winter as it is one of the few road that are not plowed but open to vehicles. it starts out at 3400 feet and goes up to 7000 feet so even if there is no snow down low, there is always snow up higher for people to play in. Our goal is to inform people on where they can legaly drive.

Please stop by and say hello. Just look for the large Friends of Eldorado National Forest banner and the people handing out information.

NAXJA has been a wonderful contributor to our group with a very large donation last year. That single donation allowed us to fund many projects and if there is anything we can do for you or you group please feel free to ask.

Hope to see you and your group on the 2nd. Have a very Merry Christmas and a happy and safe New year.

Reinstall my t-case and cross member, refill my transmission, bolt the front suspension back up, cut and patch the bottom of the the driver door, reinstall some weather stripping and interior panels, and reinstall the seats.

I'd like to shoot a little paint (or I'll have to remove all the weather stripping again) and mount and plumb the compressor (or I won't have a front locker).

I did just find out that I'll have all day on 1/1/10 to work on it, but that's cutting it pretty close. http://www.slicky.net/smilies/sad.gif

that is quite a list..:wierd: Are you doing writeups too? I'm stressing over welding in some shackle mounts for the rear bumper and installing a CB.. My plan B is to ghetto mount some tow hooks to the stock bumper mounts and cut holes for access.. either way, I'm mobile.. Good luck with that list..

If you are welding shackle mounts to only the bumper, that is not a tow point. Either find a hitch at a junkyard or buy one. Both are better than welding to the stock bumper.

Hi, got back from Mormon a few hours ago.

There in not much snow to stuck in ON the road and it is well-packed, a tow truck was able to get everywhere. If you wanted to get stuck, you'd have to go on some of the side roads, they are covered by fresh snow.

As we were leaving, snow kept falling.
Right now, stock guys would have a lot of fun.

Alright, so those are the people who I think posted up saying they wanted to go. If your name is on that list, please quote it and either keep yourself, or remove yourself. Those of you not on the list, please quote and add yourself.

So far it looks like 17 rigs possibly going!

Looks like there is a winter warning for the Sierras, possibly 3-6'' of fresh snow where we will be. Andrey posted up earlier that there was snow up there, so looks like we will be good. Not the 1-2' of snow I was looking for, but enough to have fun.

* TIMING: SNOW SHOWERS ARE EXPECTED TO INCREASE IN COVERAGE AND INTENSITY EARLY FRIDAY AND INTO NEW YEARS DAY. SHOWERS SHOULD BEGIN TO TAPER OFF FRIDAY EVENING.

* SNOW ACCUMULATIONS: TOTAL SNOW ACCUMULATIONS OF UP TO 8 INCHES ARE POSSIBLE ABOVE 7000 FEET. BETWEEN 6000 AND 7000 FEET... A TOTAL OF 3 TO 6 INCHES OF SNOW ACCUMULATION WILL BE POSSIBLE.

I need to patch some holes in my floor and zip tie whats left of my dash back together and then Im ready to go. See you guys Saturday!

I have a tow rig and a trailer at phils house right now.

Its drizzling in Sac, so we're going to load the rig tomorrow.

We were thinking about doing a lot of things to Phils rig to make sure his junk didnt suck...

like add door bars for safety, add diagonal bracing to the cage for safety, make the lights work for safety, install safer suspension seats...

but now I think the plan is to drink more bud light, watch The Hangover, and crash:gee:

Thanks Matt for setting this run up.. Danny(Radbassist) and I had a great time. Thanks for putting up with the YJ and for making us feel welcome. I look forward to the next run and watching Letterman go balls out again.. That dude is NUTS!!!!

Anyone get a shot of that brand new Subaru up on the snow mound? That guy was something else!!! lol

Thanks you guys for making my Daughter and I feel very welcome. Although we've been wheelin since she was born it never fails to surprise me how friendly us wheelers are. The best group of land users out there!

I have a pic of that Subura or whatever it was on top of the berm and as soon as my Daughter downloads her camera (the pink one) I will post them.

I can't wait to get home and see your guys' pics. (Here at work most pics and certain other things are blocked and won't download)

Thanks again!

Looks like you all had fun, thanks for sharing the pics. I couldn't convince myself to leave my nice warm cave to purposely make myself freeze.

Really? But I was try'in my best to not scare anyone off, and be a bit more mild on this run.

Not bad at all for a first run to kick off the 2010 year!

It was great to see some of the younger family members on this run, I hope everyone felt welcome and wants to go on another NAXJA run soon!

How about a late Feruary Bald Mt. run?

Great pics guys.

Looks like a blast. Hopefully I'll catch up with everyone over summer, I was just too lazy to drive up there, and gas money is tight. (Im also sick of stacking up miles on my jeep)

edit: It appears you not only have a facebook, but against my better judgment, I accepted your friend request. Please dont pull a Cherbear on me!

A cancer, virus and a fungus. More fun than a hydrolocked motor. More useful than broken axle shaft. :wow:
