alright guys, i have a couple of questions for ya.

i found a 1988 tan, automatic, chero with leather interior for $150

first off it has a minimal amount of under carriage rust

ok, so.... i am going to college next august, and i didnt want to drive 2.5-3 hours there and back every other weekend or so after i get my new stuff in (4.56, 35" ltbs, lockright front)

so i figured id get a beater and fix it up a little bit for the littlest amount of money possible. but it still needs to drive.

like i said i found a $150 one and the body is in fair condition. small rust bubbles in the paint here and there, slight impact damage to the front left. fender can be bent back to shape, bumper would be removed or cut. and the whole thing would get a new paint job (with some rattlecans)

thats the good.

here is what i noticed about it

219,*** miles (not that bad, it seems like it runs great)

exhaust is broken probably by where the header meets the pipe to the cat

drivers seat is broken, i could temporarily fix it, until a swap can be made.

Transfer case is stuck in 4H. what do you guys think, linkage... he said it did that a couple weeks ago when he checked it... i tried in neutral, holding the brake, everything, it wouldnt budge in either direction, though it does function)

the brakes had very low pressure, not very good stopping power, but a little, i need to drive this home a half hour

has a hitch

Trans seems like it shifts very nicely, very smooth. engine seems to idle consistantly

heres the catch. the hood is stuck, the latch broke, and the hood wont pop. i want to check out the engine and see what it looks like, and change the battery out (its dead)

also, im not sure if its an alternator problem, but it idled for a while, and when i went to turn the brights on, it shut off completely. the lights worked fine, but the brights shut it off. maybe the battery is just really dead, but i thought the alternator would keep the thing running...

i think that about covers it, im going to go back on Wednesday with my dad to check it out again, ill see if it has a 44 (i doubt it)

it has a clean title and everything

So what do you guys think, i could always part it out and make the money back, and save the rest for spares...

Thanks,
Travis

lol good point

its just the transfer case and the alternator im worried about. those are two really expensive (in perspective) parts

For $150 i don't think you can go wrong. Like you said...if it doesn't pan out, you can always part it out and get your money back.

yea, thats what i was figuring. even if i need to i can just save the axle shafts and what not, keep the front DS for a rear when i get the SYE

its its got a 44 its a 100% buy though

so any ideas on how to get the hood to open?

if i buy it ill be taking the fascia off and seeing if i can get in from there,
any body with the same problem. guess ill search around for a while. BTW the interior pull cable is useless, when pulled it doesnt pop the latches on either side.

Reach the latch rod from underneath, with a set of pliers pull it toward the passenger side

ok, so i got another question.

the battery was dead. we jumped it and let it run for about 5-10 mins.
i tried the lights and horn and they both worked, i then went to turn on the brights and the whole jeep shut off... is this a malfunction in the wiring, or is it a battery/alternator problem. i figured that i should have just let the jeep run a little bit more, but it just shut right off, no sputtering or anything...

what you guys think
