View Full Version : CB Install night.

Out on the trail yesterday a few of us (with CB's) were talking about doing an install night to help people who don't have radios get them in their jeeps.
The more we talked about it a few idea's started to float around.
Who would be interested in a "group buy" on radios? Its only a thought right now and we would need to try and find a place that would give us a good deal on a batch of radios but it might be a way to do it for cheap.
Lets discuss this....

I do agree, everyone out on the trail should have one, CB, not FRS(although maybe the tide is turning:D ) but more than willing to help out on an installation or 8 :D

I know we definitely felt a little out of the loop not knowing what was going on every time we stopped. I'm thinking a cb is on the list of needs now. And yes, I will need help figuring out what the heck to buy and how the heck to install it.

Count me in on this one, after this trail ride I can see I need something more than my short-range 2 ways. I started looking at CB's online when I got home yesterday. So keep me posted. :)

I wonder if the shop up in Ogden would be able to help wihta group buy. Don;t know if an increase in number would get him a better price on all his orders....?
Maybe Bryon can get a deal at work. :dunno:

That's exactly what we thought and talked about, Bryon. But I guess that Flying J is broken up into so many different departments that were not sure what he can do. We also talked about maybe talking to Dave at Cutrubus to see if he might be able to get us a deal.

I bet Wal-Mart could beat that guys price. I bet they buy more CBs in a month then he has sold in the 20 some odd years he has been there.

Agreed, and get you an antenna from Clay's on the web.....great pricing on Wilson roofmount units, which as you all know, is the best place to mount your antenna.......mine is mounted to my workbench, next to my need-to-be-installed CB.

Should'nt the CB, be the next item installed AFTER the rocker protection?

I might be in but....
I'm partial to this one

I know some of you like this one
http://www.rfwiz.com/UnidenPro510XL.htm
but an extra couple bucks gets you gain control and PA. (I wouldn't miss the instant CH9 switch).
either model would be acceptable to me for the MJ.
If they had a black unit with front speaker, weather, and USB/LSB then I'd be partial to it instead. I know I'm picky :star:

Those prices don't seem too bad. Wires and antenna not too high either.

Maybe incorporate this with shop days in Brigham? Not to sound like a parrot, but the idea just hit me. Depending on the price I *might* get a CB as well.

That's the one I have and I love it! I got it on Hill AFB six or seven years ago for about $40.
BTW, I pulled my ash tray out and mounted this CB in its place. This allows it to be angled up for good viewing and the botom mounted speaker fires forward.

What's your opinion on a quality antenna that won't break my bank? I've got a Uniden mounted in the XJ dormant, waiting for an antenna to blast frequencies

I had a 4' Firestick that worked well. I mounted mine to the factory roof cross bar. Being 4' tall it hit a lot of things and put a lot of stress on the mount. So I sold it and bought a Wilson 3' antenna. This one tunes easier than the Firestick. I'm very happy with it. You can buy them for $20.

With shipping you'll probably pay a little more for the one on ebay. I bought mine locally at a truck stop. I think it was at the Flying J at either the 12th Street exit or the one just south of it.

How about this one? It's only about $50, and I kind of like the Cobra brand. Any thoughts?

That is the model I have. Works great, no complaints. Got mine at www.walcottcb.com with antenna and cable for about 90 bucks shipped.

I had the Uniden Pro 520XL in my YJ and now have the Cobra 19DX in my. They both have been very good units. The "Gain" control in my opinon is the most important option. Turning the gain down wheen wheelin close together makes a big difference. I do have a K40 4ft antenna on the roof which sucks. Anybody know of a 2ft fiberglass for the roof instead thats easily removable?

Metal whip style antennas tend to hold up better than the fiberglass ones do when the smacked up against trees and what not. Coax is very important too dont ball it up or lay it across it self as this will lead to interferance. The cheapo antenna i bought at Radio Shack actually works better than the Wilson I spent a Fortune on. Get a good SWR meter for the setup. Also Cobra brand radios tend to have a ANT alert to let you know there is a problem b4 you burn up the finals in the radio. My 2 cents

Yeah you are right. Even more important is to buy a base loaded antenna.
A good metal whip, base loaded antenna will work better then any thing else.

I have both a Cobra 25 WX Ltd Classic and a Cobra 29 Ltd Wx Classic. Personally I would not run anything smaller then a Cobra 25, I had a 19 at one point and like the 25 the best, It is kinda nice to have NOAA weather on your radio. Might just be my radio but anytime there is any severe weather coming in whether my radio is turned off or on I get a high pitched squeal alerting me, also does it with Amber Alerts. I stopped at the big Flying J in Ogden one day and bought a Cobra 19, then for some reason cruised next door to the CB shop the CB shop guy said take that radio back and I will sell you one thats better, I said ok. So I take the 19 back and go buy the 25 from him, it was used but he opened it up did some soldering to something? (I think he tweeked it) charged me $60. Been the best radio I have ran so far.
I dunno what it is with Ryan and I and radios? Back in the day I remember I was at the South Gate to Hill AFB and Ryan was at his house and we where talking. Then whenever I am in Moab I swear I can pick him up from 20 miles away. Now that I think about it I don't think the Radio in his Wrangler was legal? :D
I am also running a 4' tuneable wilson and an external speaker mounted to the rollbar just above my left ear.
I might donate the 29 to Naxja? I wanna take both my radios to the shop first though. I also have a set of Dual coax and two antennas I might just let go of since I don't use them.

Go to Ogden and next to the flying J is a little CB shop. Tell the guy what you are driving and he will have the mount.
5-10 bucks max. There is no part number.

The best price I could find on my Uniden was on ebay. Better than amazon and a lot better than buying locally.

I know that this is only perspective, but what are some of the better quality cb's out there? And what is a reasonable price? I see Cobra and Uniden kits on Quadratec for around $160 includes antenna and mount.
