View Full Version : Day after Christmas snow run

I'm thinking of making a run out and over the Cherry Creek road the day after Christmas. If we keep getting snow this route could be difficult to impossible to make but it might be fun trying.
Anyone interested in tagging along?

I might be downs for something. It'll be the last run on these tires and then I get new MTRs with Kevlar just in time to try them in Moab on New Years!

Yep. I was out there earlier this year and noticed that it gets quite high going over the pass. A big sign at the bottom said No winter maint. and there was no gates. Sounds like a good time to me...maybe if it snows.

Appears the elevation ranges between 5-6500' . Close enough to Little Sahara that we could take a spin in the sand..........

Not that I will be able to make this meet, but doesn't entering Little Sahara cost $$ to meet at Sand Mountain parking lot.

You guys can go to the dunes if you want, but please start your own thread. This run isn't about the dunes.
And yeah I'm still going. Where is everyone coming from? I noticed a few from Tooele. I'm game to meet in Tooele if you want. Its about the same distance for me to go that way and honestly it keeps me out of Utard Co so I like it better.

I head out that way quite often from the south end of Utah County. There is a new Maverick GS in Santaquin now. About the cheapest place at the southern end of the valley. Last Sunday it was 2.479 with the card.
Heading toward Jericho turn off via Eureka is 39 miles, 32 miles via Nephi, about a 1000’ lower also overall, less hills to climb. Less gas used if one is going the I-15 way.
Also last Sunday when I went over Homansville pass just outside of Eureka, plenty of snow, about 12 or more inched on the road. More snow has fallen since.
Has anyone used the web site http://ridewithgps.com (http://ridewithgps.com/) Neat site that is easy to judge mileage and shhow others online routes. They can be shared afterwards also.
I laid out an approximate route that can be view here: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/21625 (http://ridewithgps.com/routes/21625) Great to be able to see elevation on the route laid out.

You're right of course. Unless I have family coming from out of town (up in the air at this point) I'm going to try to make this run, as I like polishing the snow into ice for the guys behind me.:dunce:
However, I'm a little worried about the chances of us making it far this far into winter at that elevation. If I'm driving 120 miles down there... I need a plan B. The little sahara parking lot comment was purely sarcasm.
Bring your tow straps, shovels, and your patience! Anybody else got tire chains?

In Tooele we can meet at Walmart or Walkers Gas Station just south of Walmart. Both are on the west side of the road.
How about 10:00am

Well, I am thinking about doing that run in the morning. But I am an early bird, and probably be hitting the road at 8-ish. If the snow depth is too deep, I will turn around.
At this time, I might hit the dirt at Eureka and head down Cherry Creek, then out and around the mountain back thru Simpson Spring to Faust.

Looks like this fell through. SSSSSSSSOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Tom and I will probably just head out to 5 Mile Pass, run Rattlesnack and do some sploring instead. Leaving the house around 930ish(whenever I get done ordering my tires) meet at the Chevron in Saratoga Springs fuel up, get coffee, and stuff. Roll out from there 1015 ish.

I made it all the way around, more or less as I mapped out on the this link. http://ridewithgps.com/routes/21849
Snow cover roads most of the way, somewhat deep near the Vernon turn off, but my stocker made it without any issues.
