Dead Temperature Gauge

In my 96 XJ, all my gauges work except for my temperature gauge. It does not move at all, just stays all the way to the left. Is there any tricks to tell if it's the sender or the gauge?

Ther are 2 temp sensors on the 94. One for the computer, its on the thermostat housing, and one for the guage, on the back of the head left side. Check to see if the one in the back came unpluged, mine does that all the time.

You can unplug the sender (Left rear head) unplugged, the gauge should show hot, full right, ground the plug wire and the gauge will move to cold far left.

So if it doesn't show hot when I do this, then I can assume it's the gauge that's bad?

Mine is all the way to the left (cold) when it's unplugged. Thats on a Renix though...

If it don't change when you do that test you can assume it's not the sender.

That was it. Seemed to just be unplugged and now it works great. Thanks for the help.

That's what happened to mine. Whats a Renix? Yeah I'm a big XJ newbie, I built and wheeled my YJ for the last 3 years and never heard of renix before...

The Renix is the pre-91 engine control system.
