OK, had a dozen supermicro dual xeon processor 8gig ram 2u rack units sitting around at work last thursday sooooo doing nothing so while I was building my first win2003 server with exchange2003 [boy that exchange has a fubared installer I gotta say] and figuring out how rpc works over http for our remote road warrions using outlook I started tinkering between microsoft reboots.
Installed fedora core 6 in all of them then downloaded, compiled and built lam-mpi and built a 12 cluster cluster, one head unit and 11 slaves.
Now comes the big question, whats an interesting thing to do with them.. the nodes are running fine, have one nfs mounted file system off the head unit called of course 'wolf'. Ran in to this question a few years ago with the first beowulf cluster I built here at the house with some old 850-1gig slot 1 machines I was retiring, did it, said 'cool, now WTF do I do with them' not hearing a satisfactory answer and having no sudden light bulb go off over my head I took them apart as I had no idea what to do with them as a cluster.
Suggestions ???
