Slight possibility you may have had a temp sender grounding, but usually that shows a pegged temp gauge all the way to the hot side. The check gauges light was doing what it was supposed to be doing because of the gauge reading.
Definitely keep an eye on the gauge as you drive it for a while - and be sure to double check your coolant level when it's cold again to take that out of the equasion.
But yeah, a t-stat can get stuck and do that as well. Another simple fix to have it swapped out if it hasn't been done in a while.

on a pre 94, when the engine is cold, the coolant bottle should be full to the line, is that right?

Jim, that's the exact same problem I'm having with my Jeep. The check guages light will come on, the temp guage spikes, then after a few minutes everything returns to normal. I got some suggestsions here:

I still need to follow up on them...

that used to happen to my 98 before the engine died.
id be on the interstate cruising... then the check guages light would come on... the temp would be all the way up to the max temp... stay there for about 30 seconds, then drop rapidly and the light would turn off. would happen at least a few times a week.
i never figured it out.
