So my birthday was on Monday! :dunno:
Anyways, the girlfriend got me a CB Radio! My older brother got me the new Baja Almanac...sounds like I need to get an antenna, tune it and road trip to Baja!
Anybody got some experience points they want to share about antenna stuff or even help a brother out in getting one and tuning it?

Happy Belated Birthday.
Good luck with the radio stuff, I will steal some of the info you get since I have a radio and still don't have an antenna hooked to it.

I had a trucker friend of mine that 'tuned' my CB's before I installed them.
Ya' know any truckers?

Buy a Wilson antenna. The Wilson 1000 is a popular favorite, in mag mount or permenant mount. Put it in the dead center of your jeep's roof for best coverage.
Come up to me and we can tune it anytime you'd like.

There are a few CB shops still around but don't no of any in your area. Don't key your mic until you get your antenna done or you can damage it.....SANTA

OK, so I went to my local shop and they had the Wilson Little Wil. From the reviews I've previously read, it works well as a trail radio (which is the primary purpose for this radio).
So now I need to figure out where to mount the radio. I want to mount it to the roof. Any thoughts on how to make it sturdy?

Garrett what radio did you get?
My CB is mounted between the visors.
There is a brace that goes across the top of the windshield. I used two self-tappers to attach the radio mount.

I have the exact same one. The 29LTD from Cobra.
It looked like there was a brace right up front there. Did you use the provided self tapping screws or get longer ones? I think the headliner is about 3-4cm thick up front on my 1997.

There's no way the headliner is over an inch thick. IIRC the self tappers are 1/2"-3/4" long. If you can wait till tonight I can pull one to get the correct size.

I'll run to OSH tomorrow so I can do the install on Saturday. Gonna install my HID bumper lights as well. (hopefully)

mine is mounted like karstic except i unscrewed the two screws that hold the visors in the middle and mad a bracket that went across the two. i didnt need to drill any new holes or buy any new screws. fit back perfect. now mine doesnt look great but i found some rail laying around work and used it. if you actually made a nice looking bracket this would be perfect. I ran the wires straight back and under my headliner and down the pillar by the window. sorry for the bad pics but its a cell phone at night what can I do hahaha.

I run a Cobra 29, Road King mic, with the Wilson 5k with the mini wil gumdrop mount. through the roof. make sure your mounting surfaces are bare metal and your antenna is matched to the radio otherwise you can burn out the finals in the radio. I dont know of any GOOD radio guys out here but if your interested i can call my CB guy up in Nor Cal and ask him if he knows of anyone down here. Smilly's CB shop in Corning CA. Built mine.

December 8th, 2009, 12:23
why yes, I did! and since I took the dash apart a bit to run the wire down the A-pillar to the battery, I went ahead and rewired a new dome light too!
I'll take pics to show you in my build thread!
