96 4.0L. Been working through an overheating problem. I took the thermostat off to replace it and no coolant spilled out. That cavern was totally empty behind the thermostat. Is that normal? I kinda expected coolant to spill out. The overflow tank is at the right level too.
thanks,

most probably an airlock, make sure your thermostat is not backward (wax pellet goes in). Try filling it up through your upper rad hose, it is much easier to get all the air out.

Fill through radiator with vehicle running. Squeeze upper hose too with rad cap off.
