questions about a 89xj

My dad is looking for an xj, and he called last night having found one that is said to run good but has a bad rear end for 300 bucks. Im trying to help him figure out what motors that could have had in it. And if it does have the 4.0, is the the renex style?

It is a 89 xj thats all i know.
Also, would this be the dana 35?

I have an 89 - yes Renex, 4.0. Likely a Dana 35.

ya renix , if its a straight six its a 4.0L, most times dana 30 front and dana 35 rear.

Thanks, is the gear ratio going to be 3.55 just like on the newer ones, and what trouble would i have swapping in a newer rearend or even a 8.25. Would i just need the 8.25 and the driveshaft.

It is an auto trans.

just remember the 89 most times has antilock brakes, make sure they work properly.

and usually no prob to interchange axel.
