Just a little comisserating here, how many going to Moab have so much to do still to their Jeeps that they feel like they are just about rebuilding the whole thing?
Obviously I do

I'll should finish most everything up today.
CROK plate and a rusty's steering box brace, new C4X4 front winch bumper, reinstall my winch, and a Rusty's steering conversion. I have one bad "hard" brake line that needs to be cut and re-flared, but I need some help from someone that is competent at doing brake work. Other than that, I just have miscellaneous stuff I want to do, but if doesn't get done it won't stop me from going to Moab. :D

Well,
I started a whole new project, started with a totally stock 95 XJ, on Aug 23 just to bring to Moab. Last night I got most of the suspension done to put it on all 4s. Still have a lot of thing to do to complete the entire project. Total of 100 man hours so far!

I got it mostly trail ready and went to "Carnage Canyon" last week -- did something bad to the ZJ steering components. So, now I'm looking at putting on some factory FSJ stuff for an over-the-knuckle set-up. Still need to make the traction bar for the rear, fix a bent brake line and install the chassis lights -- I want to do a night run this year! Then it's just a bunch of lilttle things.
See ya there!

Well, I've got the front axle out now. Just installed an ARB this past weekend(woo-hoo). Finished my long arms a couple weeks ago, but need to do a little tweaking on the bracket angles. I think every bushing on the jeep needs to be replaced. Steering was just rebuilt, too.
Oh ya, and I've got about 50 feet of seams to weld up under the jeep (damn unibody). Maybe it has something to do with running doors off since last October after Moab :) I hope the weathers good in Moab, as I don't think the doors are gonna go back on.
Then I get to do all fluids in the Mother-in Laws' cherokee, replace shocks and some other general maintenance. Vanda is driving it up to Grand Junction with her Mom tied to the top :)
Then I get have to get the new tow rig ready...........
Damn, I can't wait!
See ya all there.
Rick
PS I just watched the Moab 2002 DVD about 50 times this weekend. It's awesome!! Even my Hot Tub attempt :)

lol.... I finally got my rear seal on the AX15 done so it's not leaking anymore.. and I still gotta fix the trailer connector (bashed the stock bracket and broke the connector) and I gotta do oil all around (got the tranny and tcase done already) and even though it's not much,..... it adds to the time... and then there is issue of the radatior flush I kept postponing (I don't think I will touch it before leaving for Moab though) and the crossmember I wanted to have done, and the rear rack I wanted to redo.... and the washer bottle that needs to be moved.... all minor things and not crucial but they are still not done :(

You must have decent neighbors, Ted. Everytime I take my XJ apart and leave it on stands my neighbors call the municipal code enforcement people and I get a threatening letter (Oooo, I'm shakin' in my boots!) So now what I do is lean the wheels back in the wheel wells so it at least looks put back together to the untrained eye. I'm glad to be moving, to say the least.

Should take about the same amount of time as changing the motor in the blue XJ, I hope.

Well, there I was, headed down to CHW's to do the final major stuff (D44 axle bearings and seals), was a couple miles from my house, turned into the right hand curve and the wheels kept going straight for the cornfield and the traffic headed at me!!
WTF???
Managed to dodge everything (including the "salutes" from the oncoming drivers) and eased my way a 100 yds or so into a church parking lot with little directional control.
Took a look underneath, and surprise - surprise - my adjustable track bar had stripped the threads on the frame side mounting bolt and was flappin' in the breeze!!!!
Damn - never saw THAT before!
Managed to get it re-inserted into the tube, put a ratchet strap on to keep it together, and carefully drove back home.
Closer inspection in my garage showed about an inch of flattened threads, and even the axle side mount had an egged hole.
Strange wear - only a year and a half old. Just 32's on 4.5" - this doesn't make sense.
Anyway, got a new one ordered and am dwelling on what would have happened if it failed at 75mph on one of the sweeping mountain turns in PA or CO on my way West.

I've got rockrails on Both sides now. The ultra-sloppy tilt steering column is solid once again. The control arm JJs are rebuilt. The ARB and gears for the front have arrived and need to go in, along with the OBA to run them, and then there's the rear D44 to modify and install. And if I get all that done, I'll worry about the TJ flares and hood vents.

Hey Dan. It's about six of one . . .
http://www.chevyasylum.com/column/tiltcol.html
http://www.gnttype.org/techarea/suspension/t_steering.html
these two sites have pretty good descriptions of the job you'll be getting into, up to the point where you need the special tool no one you know is likely to have. Even before that, you'll need a steering wheel puller, and a tool that holds a big spring plate down so you can get a spring clip off the shaft. I was able to borrow both of these from a friend. I got lucky (the second time around) and found a guy who not only had the mystical special tool to get the cloumn the rest of the way apart to access all four bolts, but was willing to come out to my place and give me a hand with it. You can reach (sorta) two of the four bolts that secure the tilt joint without this special tool, and that's the way I did it the first time. Unfortunately, that stayed tight for all of about two days. So I recommend going the full route, whether it means swapping out the column, finding the right tool, or having a pro do it. It's SO nice to have it back nice and tight again. And we used plenty of red locktite on them so as to give me the best chance of not having to do it again for another ten years.
Oh yea, almost forgot - these four bolts have external torx heads on them, so you'll need an E8 external torx driver on a 1/4 inch drive extension (another unusual tool).
Good luck - it looks like you've got quite a project on your hands considering the time remaining. How goes the running gear swap?

I don't know what I'm going to do yet, I have a good column that is blue, which will sorta match my grey interior, but I don't know if it has cruise or not, so the wireing may be different. I've tightened GM columns before and I figured that these must be close to the same, right now it's just getting the axles swapped and so on, then I'll get to the column, I may pull it apart first and see how involved it is before swapping.
Armstrong, the swap is going good, the rear is DONE, and as soon as I get the 231 in I can go ahead and put the front axle in, should happen tomarrow. Not looking forward to drilling through the frame tho, but I borrowed a drill doctor to help with the dull bits. Bumpers are painted, slightly different color of sliver but it's close enough for who it's for. :) Still need to swap in things like my CB and such.
The father of the bride of the wedding I shot Sat is an old friend of mine from my stock car days, he's been building race cars and dune buggies lately, he seems to think I need a cage before we go, so next week we'll be building my cage, working a deal for wedding pics, this is his second daughter to get married in the last 6 mts. :D

Well, I finished repairing and re-designing my very cracked (bad metal fatigue) track bar mount, fixed and beefed up (again) a crack in my frame around a steering box bolt, fixed my bent sway bar links, and repaired a cronically leaking (plugged) tire. With any luck at all, the track bar mount and frame around the steering box should be good for a very long time.
I still need to fix my very bent t-case skid plate so it will bolt up properly, pull my spare rear shaft and put the main one back in, and replace some badly worn bushings in my t-case linkage. Then fix a rear tail light, adjust the headlights, check the alignment, tighten the exhaust flange, and get the oil and trans fluid changed. Oh yeah, and get my third paint job this year. :D :D
Nothing major...... :)

:banghead: Today was just a shitty day. First off I was burning out the bushings in my front axle when a piece of lit rubber fell onto the floor, where I had laid down some thin plastic drop cloth to protect my new driveway from the paint thinner and grease that was dripping from the axle as I cleaned it just prior.
Now some might say it was very foolish of me to even play with fire with a river of mineral spirits immediatly below me..but the stuff really doesnt not burn easilly in spite of what the bottle says.....except this time. The thin drop cloth was like kindling, it cought fire the paint thinner made matters worse...before I knew it everything is on fire and the PLASTIC saw horses my front axle was laying on started to melt and buckle so I ran, and grabbed the extinguisher...fire was out...what a mess, now the new $10,000 driveway had grease, oil, mineral spirits, and melted plastic all over it.
Cant let that delay me...back to work.
Start to box my lower control arm brackets only to discover that I boxed in THE WRONG SIDE!!!!!!!! AAAAArrrrrrrrrrggggggggggggghhh
Thats when I said enough for today...grabbed the Chivas R. and all has been well ever since :gee:

Or ball joint press....works like a champ. Before I got the ball joint/u-joint press, I made a bushing tool out of a short piece of 2.5" exhaust tubing with a big washer welded on one end. Use a very long threaded bolt or a piece of all thread, with an assortment of washers and a couple of nuts. Tighten the nut and pull the bushing into the tool, then reverse it and pull the new bushing in. I've changed an UCA bushing by myself in a total of 20 minutes, start to finish with that home made tool.
I sure hope all you guys with major projects still going aren't going to be like a bunch of guys from a state that I won't mention who never got finished and didn't make it to Best of the West this year. :) You guys better do a good job of prioritizing and stick to the stuff that absolutely has to get done.....leave the could live without and totally optional stuff till the end.

Well, I got my bumpers and tow points all together and painted and I put a perm. CB antenna on. Today at work, I fabed up a mount for the new electric fan that came from Summit yesterday, (nothing better than seeing a cardboard box on the frount steps when I come home form work! :D ) Hopefully, all my measurements will be right and the fan and bracket will drop right in tonight. I want to get new tires before we head out but I don't think Mr. pocketbook will allow that.

[i]I sure hope all you guys with major projects still going aren't going to be like a bunch of guys from a state that I won't mention who never got finished and didn't make it to Best of the West this year. :) You guys better do a good job of prioritizing and stick to the stuff that absolutely has to get done.....leave the could live without and totally optional stuff till the end.
Have fun, :D [/B]
On that note things that will not get done for this trip:
New paint job
Much needed body work
Fancy PUV granphics
Custom aluminum roof rack
Auxilliary lighting
Blaster horn
Alarm system
fancy stereo system
Detailed undercarriage
So that leaves me only:
finish welding up cage and paint
install front hitch
modify rear hitch for better departure angles
Install new windsheild
Install Rear disks
fabricate skid plates
Finish high steer
rear locker
fabrticate shock brackets
fabricate rock gaurds
wash rugs
install interior
wire up driver side power window
mount spare
fabricate CAs
install new lift
extend all brake lines
worry about rear driveshaft..possibly lengthen
Piece of cake.......if I work 24hrs a day and dont sleep from now until the 3rd

Yeah, My tcase started makin funny noises on the way home from the pine city mudbog / hillclimb yesterday, lost the tail pipe, bashed the rocker where the steel I have at home should have been on there and protecting, and fried the alternator!! Thats ok, I wanted a 140amp anyways with the winch that will be on there tonight.
Guess I should tone it down a lil on the moab testing and get in the garage!
I gotta say though, I am very impressed with what my XJ Dominated yesterday.
There was a bunch of sand hills right out from a thick mudpit that required 3rd gear, and the best part was the swamp that I don't have any pic of, just short video clips I mashed though pretty deep till I finnaly got stuck and let about a galon of water on the passenger side. so I went back and did the log hill one last time before the 44's kilt it.
I got complements from just about everyone I talked to about how well it wheels and looks. So that was very nice after all the hard work...
They had a pretty cool log hill that I made it up 4 times before the big guys with 44's came and rocked its world. http://community.webshots.com/s/image3/3/8/0/92430800KbUCUC_ph.jpg

Today removed rear axle, installed locker, cut off shock perches, relocated and boxed them, fabricated a diff. cover gaurd, installed ZJ rear discs. Etched, washed, primed, and painted the rear diff. (4 coats) Removed bar pins from old shocks installed them in new shocks. Installed S.S. brakelines. Made 100 phone calls to get the rest of the supplies I still need next day air. Quit painting and keep welding, you can paint it when you get back. You don't need diff guards in Moab. You don't need long arms in Moab, ask Beezil, in fact you don't need long arms anywhere. Oh yeah, I guess they might be nice for the long drive out to Moab.

- Switch front axleshaft to remove disco.
- Cover the hole in the housing for the disco unit.
- Install rear locker.
- Switch sides of rear brake backing plates (long story).
- Replace rear wheel bearings and seals (have to be pressed!).
- Relocate rear axle 3/4" forward.
- Make some rear lift springs from comanche leaf packs.
- Obtain and install longer e brake cables.
- Modify drag link to eliminate binding.
- Trim fenders.

- Have Dr. Sawzall ensure that those new meats actually fit!
- Install front tow hooks.

Failure.....
Not gonna make it.
What got done:
rear Lockright
fabricated Rear dif. armor
Rear disk brakes
Chromoly hi-steer with 7/8 TRE
Prototype PUV Chromoly tapered roller bearing long arms
Fabricated front diff. armor
S.S. brake lines
derusted and painted both diffs.
85% of PUV rollcage
Relocated rear shocks
bored out throttle body
Replaced shocks
installed 8" lift
cleaned all rugs and door panels
removed entire interior
started to derust the unaccounted for floor rust
bought tons of supplies and materials
new tires
fabricated hitch
installed front and rear fog lights into bumpers
Had custom decals made
rewired drivers door panel (wire by wire)
What did not get done:
completion....basically another weeks worth of work. beteern dialing things in and still fabricatein many things as well as installing the mountain of other parts and accessories I had bought or made I simply did not give myself enough time. :(
Dont know what I was thinking....clearly I must have thought things go smoothly and you can do 2 months worth of work in just 2 weeks by yourself.

I leave early Thursday morning.
