Wow, gotta say, HDTV on my new 50" plasma using HDMI is impressive even if it is 1080i cable HD going to a 1080P tv. I'm resisting the urge to go pick up a BD player to go with it till next month...

Get a PS3 instead -- then you can use it as a full media server.

Unless you build yourself a Mythbox.

At $299 Bit pricey just for that. Already got a myth box as well as a replay5000. The TV is panasonic, BD panasonic is $149 at sams.
If I had money to throw the TV would have been a 65" :D :D :D :D
Once the 50 dipped under a grand that was it..

I've been very impressed with HDTV on my 52" DLP TV, but to be honest the Blue Ray is not that great of an improvement over DVD. It depends a lot on the original media I think, but I've yet to see a movie that just blew me away over its DVD counterpart. Now, 1080p is a HUGE improvement over 480i for off air TV and makes the HDTV worth it for just that.

BTW, I also agree, get a PS3.

There's just something seriously badass about playing CoD on a 54" HD screen :D

I made the mistake of paying attention to the TV prices at Costco the other day - they had a name brand 58" Plasma TV for $1600. We paid $2500 for our 52" Toshiba Regza 2 years ago - I'd love to have that $900 back. We bought a 42" version of basically the same TV for our bedroom a year later for $1300. My daughter wants a 32" for her room now, but I'm thinking of picking up the 58" for the living room, moving the 52" to our bedroom, and then giving her our "42. Why is it that the rest of the world hates Americans again? ;) Nah... We take movies pretty seriously in our house, I'd bet that we've actually saved money by holding off on going to the theater and just waiting until movies hit the DVD shelf (or Netflix). We used to go to the theater up to 2 times a week. +1 for the PS3, and add one for the 360 and a Netflix account.

I can't afford the time to veg on the couch, I'm pretty selective, scifi on fridays and ncis and 2 1/2 men, thats about it. Anything else is on the edu channels. I watched arnold doing his mars trip on it the other nite with my old dvd player, about 30 min anyway, nice. Going to hook up the wii later and see how that works, the wife and daughter like it.

This, from the guy with 14k + posts on one internet forum! Just kidding... I still manage to find time to wheel at least 3 or 4 times a month, race my RC junk occasionally, work my 40 hours, ride my bike, etc... Movies are how we unwind, it's good quality family time.

The only real TV shows that I ever tune in to are on Discovery, National Geographic, The Documentary Channel... But given that my wife hates watching most anything that would be considered educational, even that's pretty rare.

I'm no where near as prolific as I used to be. That was back in my rocky up and down days job wise. Watched "Australia" last week on normal tv, will see what it looks like in HD.
