there is a few things to remember when welding spiders, clean is the name of the game.
i pull the spiders out and clean them in the solvent tank, then heat them up to abouot 350-400F and let them cool naturaly i clean the carrier in the same manner after removing the side bearings. then reassemble the carrier, install the axle shafts(to keep the splines from getting splattered),then install the cross pin and bolt i then wrap the side bearing area in tin foil to keep that area from getting splattered. heat the spiders and side of case up to a very dull red and weld the side gears to carrier, spiders to side gears in the voids.
before i do any of this i go dig a hole in the front yard and toss it in there and bury it overnight so it can cool slowly.
when you dig it up the next day clean it off with a hose and get any loose slag/splatter knocked off of it. clean it in solvent, rinse in water, dry with compressed air and re assemble enjoy free traction.
