Where`s this tree run at? Oregon it sounds like. Do we have our own tree run. Let`s get this going in our neck of the woods. We can run up the 70 or 72 road?

My family and I like the noble fir. They are the ones that have separate levels like plates on a stick. I was up there today scouting for some but they only grow above 2500 feet in the wild. So most likely by Dec 12th they will be snowed in for me only running 30" Swampers.
I will be in never the less since I live so close.

November 2nd, 2009, 18:53
Is that the one going to the towers? If so yes/no. I was up there Sunday they were both open to the cell towers and to the lake. I drove the one to the lake had to go threw a couple tank traps (not that bad quads flattened them down a bunch) messed around for a bit and came back down and the gate to the towers was locked again. I was the only one up there that I know of so who ever locked the gate left mine open to let me out.

November 15th, 2009, 00:23
I've gotten severa more reports that the gates are closed to the summit.
If that's the case, I'm thinking maybe we'll head for South Fork mountain....
Or something. We'll have snow to play in anyway
robanddee2
November 15th, 2009, 09:58
yes the gates are closed. Within the next five to ten years they are going to close all of the roads up there except the main road going up there and the road to colton. Also the forest service is going to start patrolling up there starting the first of the year and i heard they got 10 brand new sleds. but i will b there.

Well if thats the case and were going to Gifford Pinchot, im just going up the memaloose side of goat. Theres lots of gravel pits and very wooded areas. Theyre all on legal forest service roads so hopefully I wont get in trouble. I just dont want to drive the jeep that far.

I'm with Nick. We don't need trails when we've got snow. It'll be just as easy to go up and hit up the gravel pit and associated areas from two years ago. Should have more snow this time around.

You'll find snow higher up, we went from the North fork Camp ground 1st left up and over 4610 aways I believe and came out 4611? on top of the hill which drops you back down to Estacada. Up above aways is where we hit snow. We weren't looking for trees in our group though. Enjoy. I should see you guys on the next run.

its pretty moderate if there is snow and you will be in good hands. :laugh3:
If the weather is supposed to be "not so friendly", i highly, HIGHLY recommend getting off the mountain before the sun sets. There is nothing creepier than sliding down the mountain on a sheet of ice in the dark !

With the call for freezing rain in the forecast starting tonight and into the morning, it might be nice to extend the depart time.
Depending on if / when we get hit, sometimes its really bad in my neighborhood.
Coming from the west side, its a drive out there. Cover the roads in ice.. and its a slow ride.
I figured I would throw that out there.

I would leave EARLIER , but its avoiding the long drive on ice that I would like to accomplish.
This is the last jeep outing before the next phase of ugrades. I am not going o turn an hour+ dive into a 2+ hour adventure.
Especially with the Yahoo's out on the road that pretend the ice is not there.
I am heading to San DIego Next, week. I don't need any added Tow or Damage bills this weekend.

It does sound like we will get some snow overnight, and then a possibility of freezing rain later on in the day for the metro area. So the drive there shouldn't be the problem, it's getting back home. :D

I don't think it was more than a couple feet deep, but it was powder covered in icy crust. At times I was moving less than an XJ length before I'd have to back up and hit it again. I aired down somewhere between 0-3psi. My gauge doesn't go low enough to tell.

Got pulled over by a forest ranger on the way up the hill over the pass by north fork, he was checking tree permits. just showed him ours, ran my stuff, and let us go. He said its a $150 fine for not having a permit. Thats a spendy tree. I guess even firewood has to have a permit.

I guess even firewood has to have a permit.
never in my life have i herd that. espetialy at northfork. its forest cleanup and is encouraged by every forest ranger ive ever met.
granted they dont want u cutting green trees, even if leaning or down. and no removal of wood "take it home"
Crazyness. guess the forest sirvace has a hard on for revenue not unlike many other state sirvaces.

well i finally made it to a run. after being plagued by issues all summer long, from leaking radiator to granaded pinion yoke, i finally got 'er to the woods. i have seen better snow up south fork way earlier in the season than what we had for this run. still, at least for me it made for a good shake down kinda deal. everything held up, stayed running cool, no new vibes on the way home (were none to begin with) seems everything did just fine. only issue i had on the way out that morning was the steering was a tad odd, meaning the rutts in the road would toss me around like a pinball. found out wile airing down all tires were at 20psi eccept for the right front wich was at someware around 40. oops!
somehow i managed to arrive at 9:00am on the dot. there were only a few there when i pulled in.

after airing down at a random lake (williams i think) we went to play at the top of south fork mt. it didnt take long for Ken to get antzy and start humping rocks.
