So I'm in the middle of painting the trim on my XJ. When I got to the point that I had all of the trim tape/papered off, I realized that the paint was still in the jeep, and my doors were basically taped shut.
So far so good though. It's hard to tell how it's going to turn out, as the paint's still drying. I'm using Duplicolor Auto Trim Paint.

Wups.
Slit the tape over one of the door jambs with a razor blade. Problem solved!
In fact, it would probably be well to slit all of the door jamb gaps right down the centre, then fold the tape around the edges. This will give you a little more protection against runs on the edges of the panel.

Actually, I just untaped the hatch, since there was the least amount of tape there, and crawled through. Here is a before/after of the project... the before pic looks a little worse in the photo than it actually was because I had scuffed it for the paint to stick, but the results really were this dramatic.

Most definitely. I would recommend the product. It worked great.
For those interested in using it, just make sure you use it in plenty of light so you can see how thick you're laying it down...I left it thin in a few spots. Also, if you pull the tape up within a few hours, be careful not to let the tape stick to the painted areas, as it peels easily before it fully cures.

you sprayed the bumper end caps while they were on the jeep? i took mine off when i did them so i didnt have to deal with any posibility of black overspray on my white paint.
looks really good!

I've done it to a few cars and its held up great in TX for a couple years. I sprayed my new XJ and it didn't last a month.
Gotta do it again...maybe my prep work sucked.

In hindsight, I wish I had taken them off...would have probably taken much less time than taping. At the time though, I wasnt sure how hard they were to remove (still dont know, in fact.) so I just went the taping route.

I'd have to bet on that. I did bad prep on my quarterpanel after the accident I got in (rear brake line blew up ) and the paint was orange peeled pretty badly and chipped off when I leaned against it with my keys on my belt, as well as when I ran my hand along it while wearing a ring by accident. The new matching quarterpanel I picked up at the junkyard with factory Classic paint and re-trimmed/detailed with Sport paint/trimstrips has lasted through all sorts of nonsense because I properly prepped... removed all adhesive from the trimstrips, scrubbed clean with the harshest soap and degreaser I could find, wirewheeled the slight rust bubbling, then used 600 grit sandpaper and removed the dust with a clean lint-free wipe and denatured alcohol.
Removing the random gunk from the surface, and removing the sanding/roughing dust is just as important as sanding - and sanding evenly is very important too. I love those sanding sponges meant for drywall work for getting into all the corners and folds..

wow great results! The trim on alot of XJ seems to go bad... Kylon i have heard works well.
I have used Duplicolor Fabric and Vinyl paint for exterior and interior plastic. That is good paint, a little on the expensive side for spray paint, but worth it. It works on about anything really. Its all about the prep!! just prep well, and i bet (not recommending) you could use the worst paint, and have a good finish!
