Charging Problem

Sometimes while driving my 2000 xj my volt gauge pegs out.It doesn't happen often but it is a problem.Anyone have any ideas?
 
It seems that my battery is bad so I replaced it.I'm wondering what caused the overcharge and if it killed my battery.I found some good suggestions on this site that needs to be checked this weekend.
