95 cherokee sport, 4.0L. when i put her into drive everythins fine but it wont shift into second gear. after holding steady at around 3500 rpm for a couple seconds something finally happens and it feels like its shifting but then there's absolutely nothing. can give her gas an she doesnt go at all. once she's rolling she seems to catch and slip on and off. doesn't seem to make a difference whether i'm in drive 1-2 or 3. is this my tranny or my torque converter. any input more than welcomed. links to faqs just anything. i've tried searching more than one forum as well

I think the AW4 shift point from 1st to 2nd is a healthy 4,500 rpm.

Could be a bunch of things...

Easy...
Check fluid level in PARK or NEUTRAL while the engine is running.
Is the fluid dark coloured or burnt smelling?

Becuase you probably need a trans flush and filter change.

Hard...
Solenoid got out, Mine went out and it wouldn't shift back to first, and wouldn't go into fourth. So I only had 2nd and 3rd. :-(
TPS or Kick down cable is bad/going out.
-Resetting the Kick down is easy. With the enginge off, press the button on the cable located infron of the TB and then turn the throttle plate/valve to WOT(wide open throttle) or full throttle, This will reset it.
The solenoid is harder, you have to take it to a transmission specialist, DO NOT GO TO AAMCO. They said I needed a Rebuild when mine went out, $2,400 when a local and well trusted shop said it would only cost $275 for the solenoid, fluid, filter, gasket and labour.

Try the easy and reset the kickdown, then go to the shop...

But the solenoid is common with the AW4.

yes sorry forgot to mention had already checked the fluid . also truck has 254xxx on it as well but ran pretty darn good before this. for the flush should i try dropping the pan and doing the filter or bringing it in for a full flush

i might hold off on the flush and look for a shop that knows jeeps in particular. see what they have to say. the last couple times i started the jeep it would rev to around 2grand and hold steady until i put it in gear. is this related at all or who diffrent problem

Unplug the TCU and drive it shifting manually. If it shifts Ok manually, then the problem is electric--TPS, TCU, TCU fuse, solenoids, wiring harness.

i've got bigger issues now. while trying to figure out what's goin on with the tranny the whole truck coughed, sputtered and stalled. won't even start now...

No crank or crank, no start?

What is your static battery voltage? If it cranks, what is the cranking voltage?

it cranks over just doesn't fire. i know how to check the battery but how do i check cranking voltage..or is that the same as my battery ? i'll check it later tonight after work and post back

In terms of the tranny, I would just drop the pan and do the filter.

"Flushing" the tranny is never a good thing, it just pushes junk all over the place.

I once thought that I had ruined my tranny, it shouldn't shift right, wouldn't shift into high gears, etc.... My mechanic friend had me just drop the pan and change the filter first, before really looking into replacing the tranny. Sure enough, it worked just like new after that!! A few hundred miles later I pulled the drainplug again and changed ~3.5 quarts. From there on out I just pulled the drain plug ever other oil change or so, and the tranny was great. Oh, I did install a cooler too. Went great for another 60k or so until I sold it to some kid, who beat the bag out of it for another 30-40k before he parked it in his yard where it now sits, awaiting for him to be out of the service.

Cranking voltage just means to measure the battery's voltage between the terminals while under a cranking load.

If cranking voltage drops to less than 9 volts your electronics won't function.
