Sounds like there's quite a bit of interest in putting together a Chapter Moab run so let's do the discussion in this thread.

Discussions to this point have targeted late April to sometime in May. I'm leaning toward the 2nd/3rd week of May as things get a bit drier, and the weather isn't too hot.

I've put out some feelers to our Utard friends soliciting their input as to when is the best time to come out.

Jeff (XJEEPER) PM'd me the following:

"May weather is great, mid 80's low 90's maybe and you get the bonus of wildflowers in bloom too.
Last weekend of April is always the Rod Benders Run car show in Moab, so that's been fun to attend on Sat morning."

So, you know that if the street rod guys are doing shows in late April, the weather must be good right? :D

Ryan (Dr. Moab) PM'd me his input as well:

"I agree with everything Jeff said with a couple more points. The first is just my opinion. Take it for what it cost you. I would stay far far away from the car show weekend. It was fun the first couple of years we did it but it's turned into a joke. Last year they had more people show up that weekend than they had over EJS. It's busy, the cops are all in bad moods and it's hard to find lodging.

Second point. May is good also because most of the cotton has blown away off the cottonwoods. Late April can be horrible for anyone staying at slickrock."

I don't imagine we'd need to try to do an entire week unless most of you would like to, but I figured a Thurs-Sun or a Fri-Mon long weekend thing would be a good place to start.

I've put up a poll to see where you all think your time off would work best.

I have to check my Dads schedule. I think I will be in school all of those dates, but I will see.
I heard at Fall Fling that NAXJA usually has a get together the car show weekend as the trails are usually emptied from EJS by then. We are definitely looking forward to Moab again, We think we might even make a quick trip Halloween!

I just found this forum and it's really cool! I've been mainly on CO4x4 and had someone tell me about this. Anyways, my college (school of mines) gets out friday May 14th, so I'd be up for a trip sometime after that, (3rd or 4th weekend in may). The 3rd weekend might be tough to make though because we get out of school that friday

I'm definitely interested to see where this goes. My work schedule could possibly be re-arranged for a moab trip, Ive never been wheeling there, only passed through. A four day weekend sounds good to me! Weeks probably wouldnt matter to me as long as I know in advance.

3rd weekend in May- the weather should be perfect and it will be before Memorial Day weekend so it shouldn't be too crowded.

We'll be pulling the kids out of school for a couple days, and will likely be camping at the Devil's Garden campground in Arches. We're looking at either the 13-16th of may (my 40th b-day), or the 20-23...

Ok, our group (2-4 families) is for sure to be in Moab May 20-23, camping in Arches. It would be really cool to have several more of you dudes there for some awesome trail runs.:party:Also, my Moab folks tell me there are road races (bike) scheduled May 13-16, so the place will be a friggen zoo, with multiple paved road closures in and around Moab...

I've worked 77 hours in the last six days so they owe me one. The sooner we decide on dates the better. I've been wanting to go to Moab for a long time but it never seems to work out schedule wise.

I'm definately down, even if I have drill I can probably split-train and miss it.

It's looking like the third is winning by populAr vote and unless the poll software was mAde in Florida it should be accurate

now I just have to arrange for a trailer to tow my jeep with

May 1st an 2ed is officially the first weekend! May 8th and 9th would be the second, May 15th and 16th would be the third, May 22ed and 23ed would be the fourth and May 29th and 30 would be the last weekend of May!! Troy was not very specific as to the dates, should have been listed with dates! I myself am down for the weekend of the 22ed but would still be interested in the weekend of the 15th! It looks as though most would be interested in the weekend of the 22ed so I am assuming this will end up being the official weekend of the Colorado Chapter Moab trip! :yelclap:

Ok, after review of this thread, I'm gonna go ahead and post the tentative event date as being:

May 21st through 23rd.

It'll be my plan to leave either Thurs the 20th for the drive and get some 'wheeling in on Friday, and possibly look to leave mid-day Monday the 24th to drive back. Otherwise, the "event" will be the dates as posted.

Hopefully there's enough interest from all rig demographics that this will support runs for the easy/moderate crowd, and the difficult/hardcore crowd....... I'm hoping to run Steel Bender, Poison Spider/Golden Spike/Gold Bar and then goof around in Area BFE - Green Day or similar....

I can't remember the last time I actually paid to camp anywhere - last several trips to Utah we camped out on the mesa above Pritchett, just cause it was the last free place in town. We used to camp up on slick rock, before the gates and the permits and such..

Who, me? I'm planning to make this run and I should have a passenger seat if you should want it. Heck, I might even have a tripod you can borrow while you're there. :kissyou:

Will the majority of people be staying at Slickrock, like we do for Fall Fling?

And is the plan to actually be wheeling Fri-Sun and have Thurs. and Mon. as travel days? I'd be willing to take an extra day or two and get some more wheeling in if I'm already going to be making the drive.

YELLAHEEP
December 14th, 2009, 22:45
My plans on where to stay are gonna be kinda last minute - depends on if my wife is gonna go or not and what we do about the dog. That'll also depend on which rig I bring.

I'm not a big fan of Slick Rock, but it's not terrible. Might consider it if the group ends up there - if the wife doesn't go, I'll be doing the truck bed tent as usual. If she goes, it's likely gonna be a hotel or KOA in a Kamping Kabin.

Oh yeah, I's talking atchoo:spin1:. I'll bring my own junk, but as Clint Eastwood says, "A good man's got to know his limitations."

I was thinking something like a Thurs aft departure, and get in three full days of wheeling, and maybe a short run on Monday, and then head home...But I could probably stretch it another day...

I am going to try and go since it looks like I wont be able to go to Safari again this year. There is plenty of BLM camping (unimproved) in the area. I will be camping and anyone is welcome. Be warned, I tend to cut loose when I am in moab for some reason, so if you are looking for a quiet place to camp, my spot wont be it.

It'd be pretty hard to get lost getting to Moab....... I-70 west 330 miles then turn south on Hwy 191 for 30 miles....... and you're there.

I'm fairly certain I'll be leaving that Thursday so I can wheel Fri/Sat/Sun.

I'm hoping there might be some interest in possibly a group of us leaving early Monday and hitting Billings or 21 Road on the way back....... If I bring the Truggy and not the '97.

I got stuck in the canyon behind a herd of cattle one year on the way home... the 3 hour delay (spring break) caused us to get into Vail just as they closed the pass due to a snowstorm, had to stay over in one of the hoity toity resort hotels since it was the only room left in town -- housekeeping was fairly pissed about the red-mud-caked mountain bikes in the room... good times.

I hobbled around at Fall Fling, maybe if I can get to the place where I can put at least a little weight on it, I may be able to come.

The problem is that I may be on zero weight on my left foot for a couple of months. Getting in the rig would be interesting. How do you swing your right leg up and drag yourself into a lifted rig if you can't put weight on your left leg?

Maybe I could rig a good solid double "aw shit" hand hold at the top of the door so I could back up to the door and then reach up and pull myself up and put my butt in the seat, then swing both legs in.

I've never been to Moab and was wondering what trails everyone is planning on running. Do you guys plan on breaking into groups as far as tire size, lockers, scenic and so forth? I'm gonna be a newb and will be at the the mercy of the veterans and would like to start researching trails for the trip.

Looks like we will have a pretty sizable group headed up there and planning ahead probably won't be a bad thing.

Getting pretty excited for the trip, 3 months really isn't too far off!!

My to do list is getting shorter too!!

old_man
February 20th, 2010, 12:10
We tend to play the trail running by ear and don't get all regimented. There are tons of different types of trails. The group is great about working with newb's. Not everybody is hard core. Even a bone stock rig can have a lot of fun in Moab.

YELLAHEEP
February 20th, 2010, 23:33
Given that we won't have but a few days, it's gonna be tough to choose the trails......

Still on the fence as to which rig I'm gonna bring...... I'd love to hit Area BFE trails in the Truggy.... but there's only gonna be a small handful of guys with rigs capable...... Truggy will run any trail though.... just not "comfortably".

The '97 would be nice and I could join the groups pretty much anywhere.... but there's the paranoia of destroying it.... I shouldn't even own it if that's really gonna bother me right?.......:looney:

Both rigs need things done to 'em to be prepared for this trip too...... gonna have to pick one and stick to it.....

I hear the Po-Po in Moab have been really handing out the citations...... Truggy could be an easy target......

Ugh.....

But, as far as trails go:

-Steel Bender is my permanent favorite. Something for everyone, open/open on 3" & 31's will get it done, but there's fun for the H.C. rigs too. Scenic as all get out, water crossings, valleys, ridges, fins..... the best!

-Hell's Revenge is really a must for anyone that's never been to Moab before - actually a great trail to "cut your teeth on" in preparation for Moab 'wheeling.

-The full run of Poison Spider/Golden Spike/Gold Bar is incredible too..... but it's nearly a sun-up to sun-down day - especially with a group of say 10 or more..... worse with breakage. Folks running this need to be prepared for all weather, have good parts/gear with 'em, GPS, flashlights and even rock lights are good things to have.

-Cliff Hanger is another great trail and gets folks psyched-out on Cliff Hanger Rock..... I believe all the "fill in" damage from a few years ago by the gas/oil companies has been pretty-much reversed now so "Z-Turn" could still be quite a challenge again.

-Pritchett Canyon is always a favorite........ but expect damage and not just a ding or a scrape. This trail is imfamous for carnage. 33's, lockers, cage, winches should be required.

-Metal Masher has it's fun spots too, but can be a long, dusty drive in between obstacles. Most rigs can make this run due to bypasses, but the obstacles are all optional and fairly insane.

-Moab Rim isn't for those in fear of off-camber or uber-heights along ledges. The entrance itself has both. But it delivers great 'wheeling. Probably not for the 3"/31 tire crowd unless you're good and armored with a locker.

-Kane Creek is similar to Metal Masher in that it's got a long drive associated with it, but it's got it's fun spots. It's a trail that constantly changes as it's in a river basin - sometimes it's presents spots that are real challenging due to erosion.

I've not done many of the long-easy trails.... well, because they're loooong and easy. I don't like to drive, I like to CRAWL! Someone else will have to cover those......

So, with that said..... :D

I will be happy just to run Steel Bender. Anything else will be a good time too just because of the group! It may end up being a mood-thing with me in deciding which rig to bring....... I just might be up to running with a few newbies where the Truggy would be over-kill.... but I might really want to hit the hard-stuff...... :dunno:

We have been wanting to do Hells Revenge for quite some time so this time would be nice!

Noob question, what does BFE stand for here?

Here's their website: http://www.areabfe.com/about.php

It used to say on their website....... can't find it now, but Area BFE is privately owned by a film company/corporation and may have diversed into a few owners now to help spread the financial responsibility. It survives on donations by those that use the property (there's a donation box at the entrance) and from other donations from OHV enthusiasts to keep this place open. IIRC, it initially was an acronym for "Big Fun Entertainment" or something like that after the film company but I can't remember specifically.

It's an area where pretty much any rig can find some fun, but the lesser-built rigs would probably lose interest after an hour or two - the whole property is designed with the serious OHV enthusiast in mine. Give the website a look-see, check out the description of the various trails, you'll get the gist.

I ran most of the trails in Moab on 31's, so you shouldn't be left out. Running 31's really teaches you how to drive.

I have the Spring fever really bad. For you guys wanting to run Hells Revenge I would be more than happy to trail lead for you. I would also be interested in day at BFE. We ran Green Day a couple years ago and it was a blast. The "test" areas are fun too.

Guys this all sound great. I just got back from EJS in Moab. First time to Moab it was great. 6" Full Traction kit open open stock gearing drove it all the way. Which took 16 hours do to the snow storm that shut Vail down. We hit Hells Revenge Pritchet Canyon (first part of it) and Moab Rim. The pucker factor was high on Moab Rim. I organize a 4wd group on meetup.com. Search for Denver 4-Wheeling and Camping. We are planning to go back to Moab in late September early October. Let me know if anyone is interested. We also have many more trips planned. Sand Dunes, Rampart Range, Admas Lake, St. Elmo, and many more. I would suggest camping for lodging. Take Kane Creek rd. west of town. many paysites that range from $8 - $12 a night. This road will take you to Hells Revenge Moab Rim and Pritchet Canyon. Have fun guys.

Yea right!! With lead foot behind the wheel I wouldn't be surprised if I leave at 6am and you leave at 3pm that we get there about the same time! :D

I plan on leaving as early as possible on Thursday, which means anywhere from 6am to 11am, it all depends if I can get off work early. Are we going to try to organize trail runs, or are we just going to meet at a central location each morning and see who wants to run what?

We could hammer out a tentative trail list if ya like..... modify it once we're all in town after the first run together.... :dunno:

I'm curious how many first-timers we're gonna have? If we have a decent group of first timers, then Hell's Revenge is always a great trail to "cut your teeth" on and get a flavor of what Moab 'wheeling is like. I think it'd be a great run for all of us to do together for one day of the weekend.

Kinda depends on the capability of the rigs showing up..... some may want to do hard stuff like Pritchett Canyon or Area BFE, others may be only interested in runing mild trails. But in Fall Fling events past, the majority of event attendees all met at the City Market grocery store, took a look at the numbers and rigs and broke up into groups - hardcore, moderate and easy.

I'd really like to run Steel Bender one of the days I'm there. It's a moderate trail (31's and a locker with skids/armor at a minimum). It's my favorite trail there. Other than that, I think everyone should do some surfing and see what trails they'd like to do and lets throw some trail names out there and see what sticks.

I think we can certainly plan a trail run list for Friday, Saturday and Sunday - the majority of the group will be there for those days it appears.

So, how 'bout this for a start:

Thursday: Moab Rim (Moderate), Gemini Bridges (easy) - dunno if any hard core guys will be there yet, but Area BFE would be good with a small group.

Friday: Group run of Hell's Revenge (this way we can all meet, get an idea of the rigs and capabilities of the group to plan Sat/Sun runs)

Saturday: Poison Spider/Golden Spike/Gold Bar (Moderate and a FULL day run), Cliff Hanger (easy/moderate 31's & a locker).

Sunday: Steel Bender (Moderate 31's/locker/skids/armor), Kane Creek (easy/moderate, can be run open/open according to some folks)

Another thing that we may have some folks interested in are night runs! get some rock lights rigged up! Area BFE would be a great place to do a night run, and there are other trails out there....

time2getdirty
April 9th, 2010, 22:28
Hells revenge on Friday sounds good!
Last October with a group of five we did the triple threat in 6-7 hours.
I would love to do a night run at Area BFE! Potato Salad Hill could also be a fun night time playground.
I want to see if anyone would be up on Saturday doing either Pritchett, Behind The Rocks, Rusty Nail, and anything else in Area BFE(Green Day,Strike Ravine, Minor Threat)

I am so excited!

Rusty Nail had been closed many years ago.... I guess it's open again as I found quite a few pics on line dated '08 and '09.....

That trail has some wicked-nasty obstacles..... 33's with front and rear lockers should be required equipment for this trail.....

The first major obstacle:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v132/wthomas39/Moab3_04.jpg

This is somewhere mid-way (I was there for this flop and had just gone up this in my rig - that's me to the right of the passenger tire):

http://www.fototime.com/6B582653784F25C/standard.jpg

This one is called "Psych-out" and it looks pretty tame here, but from the driver's seat, it's pretty gnarly...... it's toward the end of Rusty Nail then you drive across a wide expanse of rock and end up on Golden Spike at Golden Crack:

Based on a couple posts from him in this thread, it looks like Jeff Turner (XJEEPER) may join us for some of this event?

If so, he's plenty familiar with some very cool trails like "Pickle" and what not that he could take some easy/moderate guys on as well.

Friday: Group run of Hell's Revenge (this way we can all meet, get an idea of the rigs and capabilities of the group to plan Sat/Sun runs)

I am a first timer and plan to just tag along with what ever people out there with more expierence think my jeep can handle. its been a few years since i have had any decent amount of time behind the wheel offroad, just a few dinky forest roads is all.

Im out for night runs I have only the head lights to see by but am up for ride along if someone has two seats.

Any body camping in a free area? If not do you guys recomend a good area to look at for a free spot. or is it a better idea to camp in the designated places for security reasons?
