If going between countries makes it hard to hold down a job, why travel between countries so often?
(There's a father's question if I ever done see'd one...)
I work from home, but it took a lot of work to get to this point...

Learn unix/linux/apache/tomcat/sendmail/etc, learn it good, then go to sologig.com and start picking up remote sys admin jobs as long as you have broadband the virtual jobs have a pretty high growth rate. I'm working in NYC for now and coming up to speed on this companies products, other than trips to various countries and states for installs I'll be working virtual in a few months. Friends wife works for IBM, project manager, they just closed their office and all the employees are now virtual, they are moving to hawaii [big island].
Medical coding is another one that has alot of work remotely, need school and certs though.

That's a scary move. If the job can be done remotely by an american for $80/hr, it can be done remotely by someone in Bangalore for $8/hour.
that said, if you want to learn the technology that has the ability to have a huge impact in IT learn VM Ware inside and out. There is a huge wave of virtualization and consolidation coming thru that will totally change the data center as we know it.
