View Full Version : Adding sound and preserving cargo space

Less than 4 days after I installed a Subwoofer in my Jeep, I was sick and tired of the space it that it took up, in my cargo area. I had today off for Columbus day and decided to fix the problem. I'm the furthest thing from a carpenter, but more less a jack of all trades, so don't laugh to hard at the semi-finished product.

I painted it black, because thats what I had handy. I don't like the look, so i'll probably spray it with some truck bed liner to give it some texture, and then do a final coat with something as close to agate as possible. I will post up more pics after its all done, and the sub is installed. I ran out of time for today, so hopefully I will finish it in the next couple evenings.

Thought about that, if my attempt at making it look as stock as possible doesn't work out, I will probably end up going the carpet route.

Yeah, the round parts are a bit wobbly..... :D but certainly nothing to be ashamed of! I'm considering doing the same in the '97. It currently has the sub just loose in it's own box back there taking up space and sliding around...... I'm not much of an audiofile..... but I do kinda dig the sound system it has.

dont think paint looks stock bro :)

the stock one is plastic, from what ive seen. OOOOOO you should carpet the whole back, maybe in shag, then put some lights and a disco... nm, got carried away.

have you thought about a sound bar? not sure if you have or not but put one in and was looking at it, think i may be able to mod it to put in 10's on each side. but thats later down the road

i got my grey carpet for 8 bux at wal mart. The roll isnt as big as the ones at auto zone, but it should be enough to wrap that box. :peace:

I like it, I think if you use the carpet it will hide the ruff cuts also so thats not a big deal. Where ya gonna put that fancy first aid kit ya got now? Looks like it will defiantly do the job you intended it to do.

Glad to see you finally got around to it! It definitely saves a lot of space. Do you know if it is providing enough air space for your sub?

Take that ring off the outside, mount the sub inside the box then carpet the outside. That will keep it clean looking and flush!!

think you maybe should have finished it, then posted pics.

count 4 (?) suggestions already on how to change it :)

Cuts are quite wobbly, I couldn't cut a straight piece of wood to save my life, I don't think the cheap jig saw I was using helped either.

As far as the ring goes, Its definitely not for looks lol. The sub and the back of the box are cutting it a bit close for space, so its acting as a spacer.

time2getdirty, It doesn't look nearly as clean as yours, but I had more confidence in my wood working skills then my fiberglass skills, which are zero. I doubt the volume of the box is correct for my sub, but its only a bit smaller than the current box i'm using, and that box sounds really good, so as long as it puts out some bass, i'll be happy.

The paint looks nothing like stock, but I think with a bit of texture and the right color, it can look pretty darn close. If it doesn't work, i'll resort to carpeting.

Iv'e done lots of systems in xjs and the box you made is barely big enough for an eight" sub more like a six" you have around one quarter to one third cubic foot of air space plus firing the sub off into open space instead of bouncing it off some thing like the back lid will disapoint even someone that dosen't like loud music I know I made the same box 15 years ago.You really need to get over space saved and think rack in the back and go with a 10 or 12 Digital designs in a ported box between 2 to 3 cubic foot. I use one that fits along the wheel well with the same radius as the back seat to the back plastic trim peice, thats ported and fires out the side towards the pocket where you put your box. Sorry the plastic piece you'll replace sooner or latter is around 75.00.

Looks good man! I think you're right about the texture. I'd sand the crap out of it and spray it. Like you said, you can always carpet it if you don't like the way it looks.

I used to be an audio junkie but those days are gone so I won't be putting in a sub for now. Besides, my dog would be pissed. LOL.

See you soon.

Funny, seems like several of us in the same boat. Just got a 12" sealed box and amp cheap, off to the JY this weekend in search of a sound bar for my 97. Was wondering what kind of solutions anyone's come up with to bolt the box down firmly yet make it somewhat quick disconnect.

When I was doing mine, I tried to do that, but I know my sub was way too wide to do that, so I had to extend it out a bit as well.

This is mine. I forgot how hard wood is to mess with. Its easy to cut, but I dont really have any good tools to use on wood. Yes, its a POS, but it was a heck of a lot better then what I used to have.

And my hiding technique. :D

It has since been ripped out to put a cage in. Not sure if I will be putting a sub back in or not.

I guess i'm unclear as to what this open space is that you speak of. As far as getting over saving space, thats not going to happen. If it came down to sound or space, space would win. I wheel my rig and need all the space I can get for gear and such. I appreciate your suggestions, but i'm not trying to build a competition system here, just trying to add a bit of sound. There are actually several people who have done the same thing i've done, and are very pleased with the results here's a link to a few that I took my idea from http://www.naxja.org/forum/showthread.php?t=971488&highlight=enclosure&page=4 , and if I feel the need to replace the plastic piece sooner or LATER, I have hookups that won't cost $75.00

Yes you can using a couple of D hooks screwed riveted to the floor board being careful not to use too long of ones to puncture the fuel tank and make sure to mount them on the top of the bumps in the bed area then use a small rachet strap.Or you can make two brakets that attach to the same as above and drill two holes in your box and insert well nuts they are like a rubber freeze plug that expands into the holes their inserted into then get two knob bolts with corosponding thread size as well nuts that go through the brackets both work great.I'm on my third xj and my brother has had two and had my own audio shop. Will post my set up soon under lite and tite

Just get a roof rack and make a package tray and make a real box and get a american made sub

Dan,

Like I said before, I'm no audiofile, but what I do know is that the box you made seems adequate - but I don't see any holes. You'll need to put one big (2" or so) hole on one of the sides to allow for the air to move as the speaker "flexes".

Boxes are available ported and sealed. It all depends on the size you're working with and what the sub was designed for.

I got the box finished today, I ended up going the carpet route, and it turned out better than I thought it would. I was able to trim the front panel of the box and squeeze it in behind the trim, so it looks alot cleaner. I also went to Rockford Fosgates website (which is what my amp and sub are), and they have a calculator to determine the internal volume of a given box, based on outside diameter. According to their calculator, my box is only 0.05 cubic feet smaller than the smallest recommended box for my sub. It doesn't sound quite as good as my other box, but I can handle that for the ammount of space i'm saving. Here it is

As a matter of fact, I think I do. Just where is the question. With the Ipod hookup, I haven't listened to a CD in quite some time.

Looks good.

I'd consider adding a grille over it to avoid smacking it with stuff.

I'm sure if you wanted a little better quality sound later on you could find a sub that can use a smaller box. But for now if you like it, all is good.

I used to be really big into the car audio and knew my stuff...but that was like 7 years ago and I hardly remember any of the crazy stuff now...just the basics. I haven't even had a sub in my car for a year and a half (salt water spill in the trunk...right onto the amp...with the power on)

Yeah, a grill is definitely in the works. I was into the systems alot back in high school. Its been a few years since i've had a "loud" stereo, and I guess I just recently got a craving for some sound.
