View Full Version : Project "Yellow Snow"

My newest project...a 1997 Cherokee Country with 236,000 miles that came from Tyler (XJ&CHZ4ME). As far as I know, its the original engine, transmission, and transfer case. The transmission and transfer case are smooth as silk but the motor is presumably on it's last leg, it has a bit louder than normal ticking noise (hence part of the name REDZONE, the other part comes from it's painstakingly red color). I'm going to try doing a synthetic oil change and running Lucas oil treatment through it to see if it quiets it down, if not, I will be thinking about swapping in a spare motor that also came with the deal.

I already have a full 6.5" lift kit sitting waiting to go on, it's hopefully going to go on tomorrow or Thursday. Jason from Rough Country treated me right once again hooking me up with coils, leafs, shocks, brake lines, drop brackets and their new track bar...all the essentials. I also have the TNT Customs (Trek's) bellypan to put on, but still have to buy the arms which are a relatively large expense, that will be the long-term solution.

Anyway enough with the chit chat...here are some pics...

The roof braces must have been glued back down because now it's dented pretty severely...

http://i822.photobucket.com/albums/zz143/97redzone/Initial%20Day/Redzone9302009018.jpg

Factory door panel pockets which are somewhat rare in 97-01s. Too bad the PO decided to bautch speaker grilles onto them.

http://i822.photobucket.com/albums/zz143/97redzone/Initial%20Day/Redzone9302009015.jpg

PO broke the seat bolt off and neglected doing anything about it, so the seat sits at a great angle :greensmok

I am in the process of converting the interior over to the 99+ full charcoal to eliminate the light gray. I've gotten the carpet and dash done already, just looking for a few odds and ends to finish up the rest. Also got a factory CD/Tapedeck combo in with a woodgrain dash bezel (since it should have had one anyway). The outside has changed a bit too with a cowl hood and non-dented hatch on it now, it looks quite a bit different. New pics will be up tomorrow or the next day with the lift.

Oh by the way, assuming it holds together, this will be what shows up to all events including WF '10 with me. :)

Thanks for looking and let me know what you think.

The Comanche is just sitting in the garage under my house right now. I have no heated garage to work in in the Winter so unfortunately that will be my hibernation and studying time for the most part, trying to get all my Jeep projects finished up in what's left of the Fall.

Back to REDZONE...Started lifting it today and it's being very temperamental with me. Both front leaf eye bolts and one LCA bolt were seized in the sleeves. Tomorrow it will be time to grind open the leaf springs to get to the offending sleeves. One drop bracket is more or less on and the rear axle is completely out. If I can actually wake my lazy ars up at a reasonable time tomorrow I still plan to have it 99% if not 100% complete by tomorrow evening. I will definitely post pictures.

XJ&CHZ4ME
October 10th, 2009, 05:46
post up some pics of the Christmas ornament once you get it lifted :D I am excited to see it lifted, but more excited to see the vast array of colors you have on the rig now .l. :D .l.

they were for sale last I knew.....
The Moabs sold last night...

This thing has fought me every step of the way as far as lift goes. Both front leaf bolts were seized in their sleeves. After hacking the left leaf spring and bolt into several pieces I finally got it out, the right one is still in the leaf, it doesn't even seem to be backing out of the welded nut, it turns, but not much is happening. I also had one of frame side LCA bolts seize up in it's sleeve, so that had to be cut out as well. Without a cutting torch, removing the full packs can be a pain...especially on a Jeep with almost a quarter million miles. Anyway, the front is most of the way done, it turned out pretty big, I'm happy with it.

I hope to work on it some more today and it will be finished either tomorrow or Thursday. It's going down to Tyler's for paint this weekend if all goes as planned, so hopefully it will all be one color again. I'll keep you guys posted as more work gets done.

Well today I got the other leaf spring out, both had to have the front eyes cut completely off and then I cut the bolt in thirds more or less...I'm just happy the weld nuts didn't snap off. Tomorrow the lift will be complete, I have to hook up the track bar and front brake lines and then get the backing plates and brake lines bent for the rear axle. Shouldn't be too bad, completion pics will be up in the evening I hope.

Haha..."Yellow Snow"...I dig it. I am getting very close to having it done, still a go for paint, I'm in taking a break right now though. It's amazing how all of a sudden when I'm working late I just get sloppy and careless and things tend to just start falling over (hopefully not on me). Still planning to leave around 8 maybe 9...

BIGSLVRXJ
October 18th, 2009, 21:56
Well, aside from extended front brake lines and figuring out how to rebuild a rear shock mount that snapped off, the lift is done until I receive my 2" boomerang shackles next week. I thought it turned out fairly well...

http://i822.photobucket.com/albums/zz143/97redzone/Lift/RedzoneLiftComplete003Medium.jpg

It's sitting down in Missouri now and will be yellow by mid-week hopefully. I plan on putting the shackles on and then if needbe putting my 3/4" spacers in the front. Then hopefully in a couple months I'll have the cash to buy the actual arms for my Y-Link kit since I've already got the bellypan. I also plan on going to 4.88s in the next couple months. So a lot of money is going to be going out but I hope to have a pretty cool Jeep when it's all done. Let me know what you guys think of the lift.

Thanks Austin. Right now the only pics I have are the ones on my phone and cant get them over to the computer for some reason. I have sent some to Collin, but they are less then stellar due to the crappy camera phone pics. I am going to go back over tonight to help put on teh last coat and then i will snap a few more pics. It is def YELLOW!! It is going to look pretty good for the fact it was painted with tractor paint in Jeremys dirty shop :D I think that as with any project that Collin has, it will look damn good once he gets it all completed with the painted rockers/roof and the remaining accessories he is going to install. I am going to appoligize now for the fact that we got all sorts of primer and yellow overspray on the undercarriage and components...but nothing a little shiney black spray paint wont fix :D

Jeremy said he was going to put one more coat on it this evening and then that was it. Once it it all back together and some startigically placed shiney black spray paint is used, it will look pretty tuff (as tuff as yellow can look..but hey, look at Hulk Hogan :D)

Fill me in on this hood...
It is a cowl hood made by a company called Reflexxions. It's a cool looking piece, but what I've found is
1. It will not open past the first hole without taking the pass side wiper arm off.
2. It dents incredibly easy, I got on top of the cowl in socks to try to put weight on the front of the Jeep and the whole cowl flattened itself. I was able to pop it back most of the way but it still has like 4 small dents and now it has red paint showing through the yellow....awesome.

Right you are "Hombre de la Cheese" these hoods have a bad reputation of not opening without removing the pass wiper, in fact, I've never heard of anyone being able to do so. Sorry about the delinquency of this thread, new pics will be posted this week. Many cans of black spray paint will be used before the weather turns for the worst.

This thread has gone idle for far too long. Project "Yellow Snow" has accumulated a list of new parts and projects in order to prepare for Winterfest.

Here's my mini "I hope I get it done before Winterfest list"
-Dana 44 out of an 87 XJ along with a set of 4.88s. The 30 in front will get 4.88s as well.
-Rough Country long arm kit will be ordered today or tomorrow.
-A ton of steel needs to be welded and black paint laid down.
-Rear quarters need to be cut and folded.

Other than that "minor" stuff, she's good to make the 8 hour trip. Pictures will be up this weekend of some of the new goodies and the exterior of the ol' girl. For those of you that are...thanks for following.

Thanks again CHZMANFAB.

I do have a question, what are you using for front tow point(s)?? Strap around the bumper? ;)

it is top secret. Actually Collin was going to try and get some d-ring mounts that we could mount through the bumper to the frame horn mounts, but he was unable to source any on short notice, so we are using a set of Suburban tow hooks bolted through the unibody tie in plates and bolted through the frame and plated on the inside of the frame rail. They are not intrusive or gawdy looking and sit in nice and tight. Just a little work on lining up the holes and it is a good fit.

Austin, I would suggest it. I dont have any thick stock like that and I really dont want to cut and drill something that heavy, it just takes that much more time. We burnt up a lot of time making the frame mounts/tie in plates. Even having a couple of the holes 1/16" off and having to bore them out slightly, it can really eat into the time involved to build. We fought the misalignment of the brackets and finally got them w/ in @ 1/16" of each other and called it good. I am going to pattern a set of premade units and then have them laser cut in batches for uniformity. The more of these we build the quicker we are getting at them. There is still a lot of labor involved due to my limited tools, but we get by and they work good. JR is tremendous help and good to have around, he does not stand still at all....go, go, go!

Sorry for the thread hijack Colon. :D

It makes sense, you gotta start from somewhere... We do the same thing at Max-Bilt....

Collin, I apologize as well, but must say, it is a damn fine looking bumper and make your rig look awesome!

Thanks Austin

Well crew, the bumper is now painted and the only thing left to do on the front is to ream out the tow hook bolt holes just a bit and get longer hardware for the steering box. Here are some pictures of the final product...

Thanks. The paint is actually implement paint under the brand name "Van Sickle". It is available at many farm stores in Iowa, Nebraska, and Missouri, but I'm not sure of availability otherwise. Here is their website...

http://www.vansicklepaint.com/

I bought a gallon of a color called "Transport Yellow" which I believe was used on heavier machinery such as CAT stuff. One of Tyler's friends shot it through his paint gun for me and it turned out great! Check em out, I definitely recommend the paint.

If you've got a farm-n-fleet type store around, chances are they'll have VanSickle.

Love the color.

TSC sells implement paint by the pint or gallon. Thin 50/50 if you're going to spray it.
