Well I went out wheeling last night and broke what ever is under that boot on the passenger side. When I got to pavement i stuck my finger through the boot and a big round bearing fell out.
Do I have CV joint or do I have u joints under those boots? I've never replaced CV joints before on anything. What is under that boot that broke?

Sounds like a CV to me.

yep. replacing the CV shouldn't be that hard, but it may be expensive.
My recommendation:
Go to the junkyard and pull some u-joint shafts from a newer XJ, replace the u-joints and install those. U joints are about $15 a pop, I bet that CV joint only comes as part of an axle shaft, and they're probably $100 a side at the local parts place.

Could I just buy the newer style axle shaft with the U joints and put those in place of the CV joints. Are the U joints stronger?
