2000 xj transfer case & window questions

i just bought a lifted 2000 sport xj. it is my first 4x4 & there is no owners manual. please school me on how to correctly operate the 231 transfer case. i thought you put the tranny in neutral then move the transfer case selector, but it wants to grind & pop out of gear once the tranny goes back into drive. am i doing something wrong?
also, the selector indicator shows that it is in a different gear i.e. when trans is in drive the selector shows it being in neutral.
there are 1" spacers between the cross member & frame. perhaps when the transfer case was lowered the linkage was not adjusted??? i don't know & do not want to damage anything.
also when the drivers power window rolls all the way up or down the gears grind. is this a simple adjustment to a limit switch to fix?

Probably the tc case linkage is binding. A lot of tc drop kits are sold consisting of spacers and bolts, but the cheapos don't have the drop bracket for fixing the angle of the tc torque rod. The torque rod runs between the transfer case and the body--stupid design. Check out this Skyjacker instructions: http://skyjacker.com/image/search/pdf/TCL30.pdf

Another (better) option to fix the problem is from Advance Adapters: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&...avclient-ff&rlz=1B3GGGL_enUS332US332&ie=UTF-8

Note however that using the Advance Adapter bracket on a cherokee requires obtaining the TJ tc case bracket and most of the linkage.

You should adjust the transmission linkage properly, then try and adjust the tc case linkage, but I think w/o adding a little bracket, as shown in the skyjacker instructions, you will always have trouble.

PS--almost forgot, Novak makes some tc case linkages for the cherokee/NP231 too, here is a link: http://www.novak-adapt.com/catalog/kit_sk2x.htm (it is a bit spendy!).

thanks Joe, i'll check it out tomorrow.
i just bought this jeep & need to crawl around it & learn all i can about it & see what aftermarket parts are already on it.

You can switch into part-time 4wd high at any time (though I find it works better if I'm moving than stopped), but to switch to 4wd low you need to be coasting at about 2-3mph, throw the transmission in neutral, then quickly and without hesitation throw the transfer case into 4wd low. Then you can put the tranny back in drive.
