I am in the process of installing a Detroit and new gears in my Dana 44. Have measured the old shim stacks and I need to know if I can use the old shims or should I use new shims??? Thanks
Its only been a few hours, and on a Sunday evening, but, Id reuse the old pack, do a gear pattern check, and go from there. Are any of the old shims damaged?
Try the first time with the old shims. Get that pinion preload correct, then install the carrier with the old shims. Check backlash. Then check your pattern. If all the specs are met, and the pattern looks good, have a beer and relax for the evening.
