overheated now runs rough

: 1990 renix , engine overheated and shut down. now its hard to start and when it does start it runs rough til it gets warm plus the exhaust stinks bad

Sounds like maybe it blew the head gasket and you're getting leakage? Do a compression check.

*Block test (sniffs the coolant for the presence of hydrocarbons)
The above are tests that can help you isolate. As mentioned, it is likely that you have a problem with the head gasket or head. Not uncommon after overheating.

i bought a 4 cylinder from someone who "shut it off as soon as the light came on and had it towed". waterpump was obviously toast. but the real kicker was the forward most piston being melted!
